Mumbai, Dec 29, 2021: One of the Greatest Box office Blockbusters of all time - "Maine Pyar Kiya" completes its glorious 32 years at the ticket window. Maine Pyar Kiya was released on 29th December 1989.

Maine Pyar Kiya was released when video piracy through the VCRs had invaded the film industry and as a result, the footfalls had been shrinking. Not only did Maine Pyar Kiya bring the audiences back to the theaters in hordes but also ended the crude & violent era of cheap and B-grade action films which were made to satisfy the video parlor audience then.

Maine Pyar Kiya was the first main lead film of Superstar Salman khan. Initially, the film was released on just 16 prints in Bombay and it opened to 90%. The film had managed to maintain a high occupancy of 90% for consecutive straight 12 weeks at the box office. In those times, the opening of the film was measured through occupancy of the film and not in raw numbers like today.

With 15cr net and 30cr Gross collections - Maine Pyar Kiya emerged not only the Biggest Grosser of the year but also the Biggest Grosser of the decade. Some trade pundits even called that Maine Pyar Kiya overtook the legendary mount Everest collections of Sholay(1975). This is still disputed but nobody can deny that Maine Pyar Kiya was one of the Biggest Box office successes of all time with Manmohan Desai even calling it the Biggest Hit since Alam Ara(1931).

Maine Pyar Kiya had emerged as the Golden Jubilee Blockbuster. Since the independence of India, there have been very few Blockbuster films that had celebrated the Golden Jubilee in more than 25 centers of the nation and Maine Pyar Kiya was among those rare Blockbusters. Popular Box office website Box office India has even called Maine Pyar Kiya amongst the top10 greatest box office hits.

The Album of Maine Pyar Kiya was such a huge hit that it sold the most no. of copies in the entire decade of the 1980s that too in presence of huge musicals like Betaab, Ek Duje Ke Liye, and Ram Teri Ganga Maili. The popularity of Maine Pyar Kiya music is unbeaten to date thanks to the late legendary SP Balasubramaniam sir who sang the songs.

Maine Pyar Kiya was a sensational hit overseas, particularly in the West Indies. Maine Pyar Kiya was the 1st All-time Blockbuster overseas since the traditional markets came into the picture. Maine Pyar Kiya was also the worldwide all-time grosser when it was released. The film was also released in the Telugu version & to date remains one of the fewest dubbed films to become Superhit in southern states.

On all counts - Maine Pyar Kiya was a crazy worldwide Blockbuster. The film also formed the Biggest Actor/Director collaboration with Salman Khan & Sooraj Barjatya who later went on to deliver another all-India bombastic blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

In terms of business with today's ticket prices - Maine Pyar Kiya stands at around 800cr Gross collections. It is 2nd Biggest hit of Salman khan's career after Hum Aapke Hain Koun and overall remains in the Top5 Biggest hits since the film has released on 29 December 1989.
