Vijay Sethupathi, Katrina Kaif to play lead in Bollywood film 'Merry Christmas'

Chennai, Dec 25 (IANS) Actor Vijay Sethupathi is to play the lead along with Katrina Kaif in the upcoming thriller 'Merry Christmas' that is to be directed by Sriram Raghavan.



Confirming the news, well-known industry expert Taran Adarsh tweeted, "It's official.. Sriram Raghavan directs Katrina Kaif - Vijay Sethupathi in 'Merry Christmas'. Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif essay principal roles in 'Merry Christmas'. Filming of this thriller - directed by Sriram Raghavan - has commenced in Mumbai."



The film that is being produced by Ramesh Taurani and Sanjay Routray is scheduled to release on December 23, 2022, for the Christmas weekend.



Sriram Raghavan is best known for directing the immensely successful 'Andhadhun' featuring Tabu, Ayushmann Khurana and Radhika Apte.



Vijay Sethupathi, who has made a name for himself in the Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam film industries, is already acting in another Hindi film called 'Mumbaikar', which interestingly is a remake of the Tamil superhit film 'Maanagaram'.

Acclaimed actor Vijay Sethupathi has forayed into songwriting, penning the lyrics for the romantic track “Eternal Subway” (“Yedho Pesathaney”) in the upcoming Tamil drama Bun Butter Jam. The song is sung by actor Siddharth and playback sensation Shilpa Rao. ## Composer Nivas K Prasanna revealed that though Sethupathi was initially hesitant, he eventually embraced the opportunity and even assisted in writing lyrics for other upcoming projects. Box Office: Vijay Sethupathi's 'Maharaja' Finishes With A Little Short of 200 Crore Worldwide

Chennai, January 5 - Vijay Sethupathi's action thriller Maharaja missed out on entering the 200 crores club at the worldwide box office despite a superb run in China where it has become the highest-grossing Indian movie since 2018. ## Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja has been fantastic on the mainland, finishing with approximately 91.65 crores as the 10th highest-grossing Indian film there. The film was released on November 29 last year in China, and thanks to positive word of mouth, it kept climbing at the box office before running out of gas. ## Earlier, the blockbuster grossed approximately 107.50 crores worldwide and it looked like the China collection would take it past 200 crores gross. However, the film finished with a worldwide total of approximately 199 crores gross, which is nonetheless a blockbuster result. ## Maharaja has earned 83.50 crores gross in India and 115.50+ crores at the overseas box office. Box Office: 'Maharaja' Beats 'Baahubali 2' To Become Highest Grossing South Indian Movie In China

Chennai, December 20 - Vijay Sethupathi's action thriller Maharaja has become the highest-grossing South Indian film and the 10th biggest Indian grosser at the Chinese box office. The film has exceeded expectations in the Mainland and is crawling towards the 100 crore mark. ## Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja has grossed approximately 85.75 crores ($10.12 million) through the third Thursday (21 days) in China, outgrossing the lifetime total of SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 (80.50 crores gross) to become the biggest South Indian grosser there. ## The film's pace at the box office has slowed, so it needs to be seen if it goes on to touch the 100 crore mark in China. If it gets there, it will become the 9th biggest Indian grosser by outgrossing Toilet Ek Prem Katha (100+ crores gross). Aamir Khan's Dangal sits on the top with a mammoth 1300+ crores gross, a record which might never be broken. ## Meanwhile, Maharaja is nearing 200 crores gross mark at the worldwide box office. Chennai, December 14 - Vijay Sethupathi's action thriller Maharaja has crossed 100 crores gross collection at the overseas box office, including more than 75% contribution from China where the movie is approaching the century mark alone. ## Maharaja had minted approximately 24 crores gross overseas in its original run and upon its China release on November 29, it has grossed approximately 76+ crores gross there in 15 days. This took the total international collection of Maharaja to 100+ crores gross and there is still more to come. ## Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, the movie is also nearing the 200 crores gross mark at the global box office and it should get there with major help from the Chinese market. It has so far grossed approximately 183.50+ crores, which includes 83.50 crores gross collection from the domestic market.## Maharaja is currently the 4th highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, behind Vettaiyan (253.50+ crores gross), Amaran (332.50+ crores gross), and The Greatest of All Time (457+ crores gross). Chennai, December 9 - Vijay Sethupathi's action thriller Maharaja has had a fantastic second weekend which was bigger than the first weekend at the China box office as it sets sight on the 100 crores lifetime finish there. ## The film grossed approximately 23.40 crores gross collection ($2.76 million) in the second weekend, a jump of over 20% from the first Friday to Sunday weekend collection of 21.10 crores gross. This shows that word of mouth is super positive and the legs have solidified at the Mainland box office. ## The total collection of Maharaja has approximately 64.25 crores gross ($7.58 million) after the second weekend in China and this makes it the 11th highest-grossing Indian movie there, beating Padman and Thugs Of Hindostan which minted around 60 crores gross each. ## Maharaja will next look to down SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 (80.50 crores gross) in the third weekend to enter the top 10 highest-grossing Indian films in China. This is the first movie of the actor in the lead role to top this milestone. ## Maharaja was released in China on November 29 and in the first week, the film grossed approximately 41 crores which pushed its total worldwide cume to around 147 crores gross. On its second Friday, Maharaja has grossed approximately 5.50 crores which took its total collection past the 150 crores mark. ## After the second Friday collection in China, Maharaja has surpassed Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 (149 crores gross) to become the 5th highest-grossing Tamil movie and also the 5th 150 crores Tamil grosser of 2024 at the worldwide box office. It has already become the highest-grossing Tamil movie on the mainland. ## After grossing approximately 26.50 crores in the opening weekend (including premiers), Maharaja showed a stronghold on Monday by scoring 3 crore gross. The movie has shown an upward trend since Monday as the collection for the rest of the week was higher than the previous day (from Tuesday to Thursday). ## The Nithilan Swaminathan's directorial minted $4.82 million (40.80 crores gross) in the full first week which is a fantastic total. Maharaja is the highest-grossing Indian movie in China since Thugs Of Hindostan in November 2018. Hyderabad, December 3 - Ahead of the two days of release, superstar Allu Arjun's action drama Pushpa 2 - The Rule has topped 50 crores gross pre-sales for the opening day in India for all versions, becoming the second film of 2024 to achieve the feat after Prabhas-fronted Kalki 2898 AD.## Directed by Sukumar, the advance booking sales of this highly-anticipated film stands at approximately 50.25+ crores gross (including block seats) for the first day as of 10 AM on December 3. The original Telugu version leads the charge, followed by the Hindi version. ## With the final 2 days left, the pre-sales are expected to pick up rapidly as more shows are being added across versions, especially in Hindi and Telugu.
