Team India retained the ICC Test Championship Mace for the third consecutive years after topping the ICC Test Rankings on the cut-off date of 1 April. We Were Pushed Back In First Six Overs - Virat Kohli

It was a great game of cricket where both teams had their chances till last over. But it was England who held their nerve well and came as victories. They had beaten India by 5-wickets in a nail-biter encounter on Friday, July 6 at Cardiff and level the series with one more match to play.## It was a low scoring thriller in which India could score only 148 after they were pushed to bat first. At halfway stage, it looked like England will take it easily but Indian bowlers pulled things back and made difficult for them to chase. But Alex Hales kept his nerve and took his team through the line with unbeaten 58 off 41 balls. He was adjudged Man Of The Match.## Virat Kohli who was the top scorer for India with 47 off 38 balls didn't look pleased with their efforts with batting. He feels that 15 more runs could have been ideal to defend on that surface which was on a bit slower side.## "When you lose 3 wickets in the first 6 overs for 30 runs it's difficult to come back. I thought a partnership would get us to 145, and that would have been competitive. Average scores in local tournaments were around 145. England made good use of the wicket which had some extra bounce and some assistance for the seamers. They put pressure on us and made us lose wickets, and the run-out didn't help either. We were probably about 15 runs short." ## "We were pushed back initially in the first six overs. Our power play was not good enough, and the score, in the end, reflects that and we just couldn't push as much as we wanted in the end. You do take everything into account, like the pitch, etc. We did well and we knew it would be difficult for England to chase down 149 and level the series, and I think they had the partnership we didn't to close it off in the end."## "We knew it would be something they would have to work hard to win. They played Kuldeep really well. Chahal was outstanding and they switched roles in both games. They did their homework on Kuldeep and they reaped the rewards. It's a cruel format for the bowlers, Umesh was fantastic as well, and so was Bhuvi, but unfortunately he couldn't finish it off.## "That boundary in the end (19th over) from Hales pulled it back for them and these small things count in T20s which makes it such an interesting watch. We gotta brush it aside, take it in our stride and move onto the next game. I think we competed quite well but England was the better side, that's why they came through today," Kohli said.## On the other hand, England who was looking clueless against Kuldeep Yadav in the first T20I did their homework against wrist spinner by practising with 'Merlyn' machine. If I think like how people are thinking on the outside, then things don't happen.## Virat is excited to get back on the field after missing Afghanistan Test and looking forward to playing abroad.## "This is just another series for me individually, but for us as a team, this is a very exciting time. After what happened in South Africa, we're actually looking forward to playing more difficult Test cricket. That I feel is the best thing that can happen.## "You don't want to go to England saying, 'Oh the Test series in one month'. We want it to actually be sooner. That's the kind of excitement we take along with us. It's the same case with the ODIs and the T20s. It's just a great phase for Indian cricket."## When it comes to fitness, no one can match Virat Kohli even though he missed out a Test due to injury he is one of the fittest players of this generation.## "I'm 100% ready to go. The neck is fine now. I have had six to seven sessions in Mumbai. I have had a good practice. I am absolutely ready to go. Went through a fitness test as well so the body is feeling fine. I'm actually excited to get back on the field which is a very rare thing when you play so much cricket but I think these sort of breaks really help and mentally they make you fresh and excited to go back on the pitch again," Kohli said.## "In hindsight, I feel what has happened is the best for me. I wanted (to experience) the more difficult phase of those conditions. I wanted the wet and damp conditions where Puji [Cheteshwar Pujara], Ishant and Varun played in. But in hindsight, if I was 90% with my body and used to the conditions rather than 110% and fresh, I'd much rather be where I am today."## Coach Ravi Shastri also believes that fitness enhanced your ability to do well and play good cricket. He was talking about benefits of Yo-Yo test which has become mandatory for selection in the team.## "You have a certain ability, but if you're fit then that same ability gets enhanced. And that's why we emphasise on this yo-yo thing. And whoever thinks it's a one-off, he's sadly mistaken. He can take a walk. The philosophy is simple. You pass, you play. You fail, you sit. The captain leads from the front, the selectors are on the same page, the entire team management is on the same page and the boys have responded extremely well."## Virat said this time its ideal condition for us as we will get enough time before playing 5-match Test series, unlike last time where India play Test cricket before limited overs series.## "Preparation, it's ideal. You get to play ODIs, then T20s and by the time the Test starts, it's already a month. There's a lot of time to acclimatise. The plan is the same as that was in South Africa, against Sri Lanka, and what was there before. The strategy doesn't change. Mindset doesn't change if we don't perform in one series or another. Our focus is on cricket. We don't have to do anything different. We have to play with a match-winning mindset. Spinners will be key as conditions are ideal for India to win in England - Anil Kumble

Raina to replace Rayudu for England ODI series

Suresh Raina is all set to make his ODI comeback as Ambati Rayudu has been out of the England tour for ODI series. Ruthless India dismiss Afghanistan's challenge within two days

Afghanistan's debut Test match could last long only two days as India beat them by an innings and 262 runs in the only Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on Friday, June 15. It took only two sessions for India to dismiss Afghanistan's batting on 109 and 103 respectively after their bowler bounced back to restricted India on 474 runs in first innings.## This is the first instance when a Test match completed inside two days. Also, it was the only 4th time in Test cricket history and the first time against India when a team bowled out twice on the same day.## India had taken control from the day one after their openers scored centuries. KL Rahul also scored a half-century. However, Afghanistan bounced back in the third session of play and took 5 wickets as India ended the day with 347 for 6.## On the second day, Hardik Pandya carried India's innings with 71 off 94 balls before they bowled out on 474 on the stroke of lunch. Umesh Yadav scored a quick fire 26* off 21 balls and gave a valuable contribution in lower down the order. Yamin Ahmadzai was the pickup bowler for Afghanistan as he picked 3 wickets for 51 runs in 19 overs.## In reply of 474, Afghanistan 1st innings was crumbled by Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin as they could last only 27.5 overs to bowled out on 109. Ashwin took 4 wickets while Ishant grabbed 2 wickets.## With trailing by 365, India gave follow-on to Afghanistan. However, their story wasn't different from the first innings. They have to rely on experience to take them through in England.## Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have been in good form in the last few months. Will they hold the key for India in English conditions?## Yes, I think Bhuvi and Bumrah will hold the key. Both of them have got pretty good control. That's what you need in England. The Duke ball has got a pronounced seam. If you get the ball in the right areas consistently, it will do a little bit throughout and they will do well.## Bumrah did very well in his debut Test series in South Africa earlier this year. Does he have to do anything different in English conditions to replicate his success?## I expect Bumrah to do well in England too simply because of the way he bowls. He has got a unique action, but he bowls lengths that are challenging for the batsmen. He will enjoy bowling with the Duke ball. I actually think all the Indian pacers will have success in England. It's just a question of the batsmen getting enough runs.## Kohli versus James Anderson is expected to be the defining battle during the Test series. Kohli struggled last time around, averaging just 13.40 in five Tests. How do you see that contest shaping up?## Obviously, Kohli is a more experienced player this time around. There's no doubt that he's a quality batsman, but English conditions are pretty tough. When you have got a bowler like James Anderson who knows the conditions so well, it's going to be a lot of hard work for Kohli. He has to be prepared to work hard. He can't just go out and play his game and hit through the line. He has to be able to adapt. I'm looking forward to the battle.## In relation to the ball-tampering episode, the Australian team of the 2000s received a lot of criticism, with people saying that this culture emanated from there. What are your thoughts having been a part of that side?## I disagree with that completely. It was just a way that other teams and media used to have a go at the Australian team because they couldn't have a go at us for playing badly or anything else. It always annoyed me. I have spoken to captains from other teams of that era, and they never felt that Australians were the worst sledgers.## Virat Kohli had a miserable tour of England back in 2014 when he could score only 134 runs in 10 innings. However, his ODI record has been very impressive in England. He has scored 682 runs in 19 innings with an average of 52.46. There's another opportunity coming up against Afghanistan## I'm looking forward to it. After the IPL, it's almost like a start of a season, so there is so much to look forward to. There are processes to be put in place on the personal front, responsibilities to be carried out (as captain in the one-off game)## That 48 you scored in Johannesburg (3rd Test), worth its weight in gold?## Two matches down in a three-match series and you get a wicket like that, you're up against the wall and the only way out is a fightback, it's how you react to the situation. Absolute positive intent alone begins to matter and that's exactly what helped us pull off that win. On a personal front, it was immensely satisfying.## That was quite a wicket## We knew the wicket wasn't an easy one but it was equal for both teams. If the wicket was going to make life difficult for us, then it going to do the same to South Africa. It was an equal opportunity contest and I thought we were phenomenal.## Tell us about that innings## It's great that I got an opportunity on a wicket like that one. I knew I was batting really well in the nets. I could feel it. Normally you do have an idea about your game but on a wicket like that, it's your guts that count. When the ball goes from right next to your helmet or even if you're sitting in the dressing room and watching your teammates bat in similar conditions, it's very easy for someone to start thinking a bit negatively. But in that Test, on that wicket, every batsman in the team was like 'ok, right now I want to go out there on that wicket in this kind of a situation'. That's exactly how even my mind was thinking too. Even a century in a different scenario would probably not give me the kind of joy that 48 did.## So, now it's all about carrying the Johannesburg mindset to England## Oh yes, it's the same intent, aggression and attitude that we'll be carrying to England. When you play overseas, it's that attitude which matters, more than your skills. Skill-wise, most cricketers are more or less similar. What probably adds notches to a team's overall performance is the intent with which you approach a game.## And a five-Test series gives more time in the overall contest## It gives you an opportunity to come back into the contest. South Africa is a classic example. The contest would've been completely a different one moving forward from the Wanderers Test. But a five-Test series has other challenges too. For example, it is important to remain fresh throughout the series. The start is always important but carrying that momentum till the very end is equally crucial. The mind should not get tired. That's the key.## Essentially, it's fitness that it all boils down to## That's paramount. As a professional athlete, you have to push yourself. Sometimes, your body says you're tired but your mind tells you something different. Then it's all about following your mind, talking to yourself, letting your mind tell your body to keep going. For the amount of cricket we play throughout the year, training sessions are vital. It's part of your life - you eat, drink, sleep, play, train. You can skip a practice session on an odd day but a training session is what you just can't miss.## And it has to be fun## The trick is to understand your body and in turn, it's about enjoying and having fun. Just the other day I did my yoyo and I was pretty happy with myself. But the challenge is in maintaining that and raising the bar.## Keep in mind, Ajinkya Rahane had captained India against Australia in Mohali Last year. Karthik named replacement as injured Saha ruled out for Afghanistan Test

Dinesh Karthik is all set to make his comeback in Test cricket after almost eight years. The regular wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has been ruled out for the Afghanistan Test after he got injured in recently concluded IPL. ## BCCI confirmed on Saturday, June 2.## Keep in mind, Saha got injured against Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier at Eden Gardens on 25th May. I might not be fit for Afghanistan Test - Says Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha, who got injured while playing in the second qualifier, doesn't seem to be an optimist about his selection in a one-off Test match against Afghanistan. ## However, the BCCI hasn't named his replacement yet that means they wanted to give him enough time to recover before the match. The BCCI is keeping a close watch on Wriddhiman Saha's injury.## "The BCCI is keeping a track of my injury on a day-to-day basis. The decision lies with them," Saha said. To be honest, I might not be fit for that game. It's not in my hands," Saha said.## However, Saha is not clear about the situation whether he will be playing or not. "I don't know the exact situation, so I cannot comment on whether I would be taking part in the Afghanistan Test," he said on Thursday. "The BCCI doctor will have the final say," he added. ## The concerned doctor will examine afresh X-ray plate of the injured thumb before deciding whether Saha needs to undergo a surgery. "The doctor will take a call next week," he stated.## Keep in mind, Wriddhiman Saha got his thumb injured while batting in the second qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, he kept playing further but didn't look comfortable in his whole innings. He also seemed to be in trouble while keeping.## Saha had a forgettable season of Indian Premier League. But he believes that his T20 form will not affect his Test match form.## "I couldn't bat the way I wanted to in the IPL. But Test and T20 are different ball games.
