It took Ranveer Singh six months to perfect Kapil Dev's famous catch

New Delhi, Dec 25 (IANS) Bollywood sensation Ranveer Singh, who is getting love and appreciation from cricket and cinema fans alike for portraying Kapil Dev in '83', has revealed that it took him six months to perfect that famous backward-running catch, which was taken by the legendary cricketer to dismiss Sir Viv Richards off a Madan Lal delivery on June 25, 1983. ## '83' got a bumper opening at the box-office. And the Bollywood heartthrob is in awe after getting such a positive response from fans, and the "love and respect" that is being showered on the film from across the world. ## Ranveer was in the national capital for the screening of '83' and IANS got the opportunity to speak to him. For the film, the versatile actor has stepped into the shoes of the legendary Indian captain and one of the greatest all-rounders, Kapil Dev. ## The acclaimed actor is a shape-shifter who can perform any role with the same grace. From 'Bajirao', 'Padmavat', 'Simmba' and 'Gully Boy' to now '83', he has played diverse characters without any reference point whatsoever and has delivered the best performances. He has made his place as one of the best actors in the history of Indian cinema. ## "Ranveer is not imitating Kapil, he is inhabiting [the character]." This message has been reverberating across social media, with netizens going gaga over his performance in '83'. ## "I am overwhelmed with the kind of messages I am getting right now. Everybody is liking the movie - Sunil Gavaskar sir, Madan Lal sir, Kapil sir, my guru Balwinder Singh Sandhu sir, PR Man Singh sir all have messaged and praised my work. What else do you want when such great personalities appreciate your work," an emotional Ranveer told IANS. ## The actor recalled the making of the film. He shared how Kabir Khan proposed the idea of inviting Kapil Dev and asking him to spend some time with the actor. ## "I spent some time with Kapil sir in his house and he has such an impressive aura that people will fall in love with him. His smile, his laugh, his walk, his talk, his dance ... yeah, he has such cute dance moves. I used to see what he was doing and what's going on in his mind. What he might be thinking at that time in 1983. Watching him so closely helped a lot," Ranveer said. ## Asked what was the toughest part to learn, Kapil's bowling style, his attitude or batting? The actor replied: "I used to play cricket in my school days and I was a very aggressive and impressive batter, also a good fielder. So batting wasn't an issue. About acting, we are professionals, so that's our job to get into the character. ## "Yes, bowling was the toughest thing to learn. It took me several months … his wrist position, his iconic jump, rubbing the ball on the chest before delivering it, I remember Sandhu sir used to say, 'Tickle the nipple, tickle the nipple'," laughed Ranveer. ## "Actually, my biomechanics differ from Kapil sir's. I was coming from 'Simmba' (the movie) and had bulky muscles. So Sandhu sir told me to get into an athletic physique," he added. ## Quizzed about whether he finally managed to get some of the speed and outswing like the legendary all-rounder, Ranveer said, "Bahut stumps udaye maine fir to (I dislodged many stumps then). I can't say about the swing, but I was bowling really well, hitting the wicket." ## Ranveer also shared his struggles to match Kapil Dev's famous backward-running catch to dismiss Sir Viv Richards, which clinched India's win in the nail-biter of a final at Lord's. ## "It took me six months to get it perfectly done. The catch was tough running backward. So, Sandhu sir used to throw the ball and I had to run and take it," he said. Asked if it was a leather ball or not? Ranveer replied, "Yeah, it was a leather ball only." ## He added: "I practised it several times and Sandhu sir then used to give me six overs to bat as a consolation prize, which I loved the most. I was given a target and I have to chase it down. It was fun," he added. ## Kapil's innings of 175 against Zimbabwe didn't get recorded because the BBC staff were on strike that day. How tough was it to learn about the minutiae of the great innings? ## "It was no doubt difficult because there was no video recording of it. And I at the same time feel bad for Kapil sir. It was one of the best innings in cricket history. And now people, only after watching the movie, are appreciating the scene and figuring out how it was done at that time," Ranveer concluded. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

IANS Review: '83' delivers an unforgettable experience (IANS Rating: ****)

Film: '83' (Showing in theatres); Duration: 163 minutes. ## Director: Kabir Khan. Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Neena Gupta, Boman Irani, Ammy Virk, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Adinath Kothare and Dhairya Karwa. ## IANS Rating: **** ## New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Director Kabir Khan's ‘83' is a recreation of a momentous event - the Indian cricket team's first-ever World Cup victory in 1983. Despite being predictable, the film offers an exhilarating and occasionally touching experience that has viewers leaving the auditorium caught up in an afterglow of excited patriotism. ## The film mounted like a brilliantly restored or recreated documentary, captures the three and a half months of - 'the may or may not win' drama, where the actors and few of the actual players seamlessly weave in and out of the narrative. ## The film focuses only on cricket and has everything that cricket fans could have possibly hoped for. The narrative- highlights and flashes the crucial matches and the moments in-between them, bringing back memories to the big screen after nearly 38 years. ## As you are transported back in time, you witness how the 'underdog' Indian team was treated with disdain, and despite all odds, how they emerged as winners. It is invigorating to witness the matches once again and your mood swings like Kapil's bat. You cheer for him when he creates history with a fabulous 175- not out against the Zimbabwe team, and your blood boils when you realise that the legendary game was not recorded on camera because BBC did not think it was important enough. ## What you see on screen is Kapil's charisma, the locker-room banter, the occasional tension and problematic behaviour between the teammates, the strategy they planned during the matches and above all, the anguish and thrills of the matches played during that unforgettable summer. ## Casting is another aspect of the film that could not have been better either. Ranveer with his prosthetic dentures- oddly resembles Kapil Dev, but he slips into his shoes effortlessly delivering a brilliant performance that tugs at the heartstrings. While he emulates the captain of the team, Saqib Saleem plays Mohinder Amarnath, Tahir Raj Bhasin essays Sunil Gavaskar, Jatin Sarna is Yashpal Sharma, Jiiva is K. Srikkanth, Harrdy Sandhu is Madan Lal, Nishant Dahiya is Roger Binny, Ammy Virk plays Balwinder Sandhu, Addinath Kothare is Dilip Vengsakar, Dhairya Karwa is Ravi Shastri, Chirag Patil is Sandip Patil. ## Boman Irani as the commentator Farrokh Engineer, Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh, Neena Gupta as Kapil's caring and supportive mother, and Deepika Padukone as Kapil's wife Romi have their moments of on-screen glory. ## The film is astutely mounted, with ace production values. ## Overall, the narrative - like most of Kabir Khan's films - is unabashedly manipulative, but this one delivers a cinema experience one won't be able to forget about anytime soon. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

When team manager PR Man Singh let Kris Srikkanth break BCCI rule

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Ahead of the worldwide release of the Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket drama '83' on Friday, December 24. Vikram Man Singh, son of former cricket administrator and manager of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, P.R. Man Singh, showered praise on the movie after watching it at a special screening in Mumbai. ## Vikram Man Singh also shared an interesting story of how his father, played by Pankaj Tripathi in the film, broke the strict BCCI rules for sake of the players. Man Singh played a pivotal role in the side's World Cup victory. He was the only member of the support staff who accompanied the team to England.## Speaking to IANS, Vikram, who was also a former cricket administrator in Hyderabad, said: "I watched the movie with moist eyes. I have no words to express the feeling." He added that Pankaj Tripathi did justice to his father's character. ## Vikram also praised director Kabir Khan for providing "equal space and importance" to each character in the movie. "I would really like to thank him for making this beautiful movie. Not a single character you will find ignored or unimportant," he said. ## "My father also felt very proud, he relived the moment and the way Pankaj Tripathi portrayed his role was phenomenal," Vikram continued. "The role of manager is very important in any team. He takes care of things to make it easy for sportspersons to just concentrate on the game rather than worry about day-to-day matters." ## Talking about his father, Vikram told IANS: "When he was the manager of that historic team in England, my father made sure the players didn't get affected by any off-field issues. Nowadays, you will find a large support staff goes with the team for any major event, but my father at that time was handling everything all alone. He was the only one who went with the team with limited resources." ## And Man Singh also broke a few rules, issued by the BCCI at that time, to provide relief to players. ## "WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) were not allowed to travel with the team at that time," Vikram recalled. "And the BCCI's rules were really strict. The players were agitated about this, as other countries were allowing it. Just before the 1983 World Cup, Krishnamachari Srikkanth got married and his wife was there in England, but she was staying in her friend's house. ## "So, Srikkanth informed my father that he would go and meet his wife and then come back for training. The BCCI was against all this, but my father told 'Chika' to let her come to the team hotel and stay with him. He even told Chika to tell his roommate Roger Binny to move to my father's room." ## Vikram continued: "So many other such things, such as distributing daily allowances and making sure that every single player of the team is happy and focused on just his game was the duty of my father. And he did it brilliantly. Till date, Kapil Devji calls up my father and speaks to him about his health and everything and he keeps praising my father in public. I mean the entire team actually loves my father and respects him for his management and honesty." ## At the end of the conversation, Vikram re-emphasised his endorsement for the film: "I would want everyone to go and watch this movie. You will find all the minor details of the 1983 World Cup." ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Updates.
