Issa Rae calls music business 'the worst industry I have come across'

Los Angeles, Dec 28 (IANS) Actress Issa Rae, whose five-season run with the show 'Insecure' came to a close with a finale this weekend, has dipped more than a toe into the music business. ## She's started her own record label, Radio, and is producing a new show about aspiring rappers, using her existing career to help launch music ones. But rather than come off as thrilled about branching out into another industry, Rae is making it sound like she's entered a den of vipers, reports variety.com. ## Asked if the music business is "a place where good ideas flourish", Rae said: "Absolutely not." ## "It's probably the worst industry I've ever come across," she told the Los Angeles Times' Mikael Wood in a Q&A about her personal and professional experiences with music. ## "I thought Hollywood was crazy," Rae continued. ## "The music industry, it has to start all over again. There are lots of conflicts of interest. Archaic mentalities. Villains and criminals! It's an addiction industry, and I really feel for artists who need to get into it... It was something shocking to discover," she said. ## Rae did not get into her dismay with the music business beyond generalities but indicated her feelings were based on a combination of her own experiences setting up soundtracks and hearing from artists about what they deal with on a regular basis. ## "I do not want to be too specific, but even with making our own appointments (for soundtracks) with labels or artists, it would be so intricate. And to find out how artists were treated on other labels ... When I myself am a creator and know what I want in relation to a relationship with a production company or a producer, I would like to think that we are more artist-friendly than much of other brands and companies out there. I want to renew things." ## Rae also knocked the Grammys in the interview and singled out one record in particular she thought had been unfairly snubbed. ## "What really bums me out -- and this aligns with Hollywood -- is the way that music is rewarded. When I think about the Grammys and these other systems that are designed to reward artistic creativity and uplift artists, I just feel like, 'Y'all don't get it. What are you rewarding?' ## "This is dumb, but I'll say it anyway: A song like (Wizkid's) 'Essence' -- just absolutely a powerhouse, and yet could not be properly acknowledged by the institution that is supposed to celebrate the best in music -- that trips me out. To see Black people and our contributions to music not celebrated in the way they should be -- I mean, these aren't institutions for us.a ## Wizkid's 'Essence' was nominated for a Grammy for best global music performance, but no record of the year. Asked about the omission in a recent interview with Billboard, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said: "It is a great record. He's a very talented artist. I can't speak to why it didn't make it, but I do really love the record." ## Rae had plenty of good words for individual artists in the interview, singling out, naturally, the 2021 successes of Jazmine Sullivan, who recorded a title song for 'Insecure' in Season 2 with Bryson Tiller, saying, "She's just literally pure talent." ## Rae also cited Don Toliver and Cleo Sol as personal musical favorites from this year. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Updates.

Sandeep Rehaan ready with upcoming single with rapper Krishna Kaul

Mumbai, Dec 26 (IANS) Music producer Sandeep Rehaan is all set to release his next single next year with 'Gully Boy' fame rapper Krishna Kaul a.k.a. Krsna and Punjabi singer Karan Aujla. ## Talking about the song, Sandeep says: "It's with Krsna and we did the shooting in Los Angeles. It is directed by Rupan Bal. The song is going to be a banger. One of the unique songs which is going to be loved by each and everyone whoever listens to it." ## The duo of Karan Aujla and Sandeep Rehaan had collaborated before with songs such as 'Mexico Koka', 'Kya Baat Aa', 'Haan Haige Aa', 'Chitta Kurta', 'Jhanjar', among others and now Indian hip-hop rapper Krsna has joined them for an untitled song which is set to release in New Year. ## Sharing his working experience with Krsna and Karan, he says: "Krsna is a gem of a person and it was really amazing working with him. Looking forward to its release." ## Discussing how the pandemic has impacted shooting and what it was like working during Covid-19 outbreak, the producer shares: "As a producer, it was very tough for us and I am sure for the entire world. Swaroop Khan: Remix can't threaten folk music

Mumbai, April 27 (IANS) Folk Singer Swaroop Khan says folk music is like a vast ocean that has been in existence for thousands of years, and he does not think that it's threatened by remix or any other type of music.## Known for his hit songs in "PK" ("Tharki chhokro") and "Padmaavat" ("Ghoomar"), singer Swaroop believes that every kind of music deserves its due credit.## "Folk music is like an ocean. It is vast and huge. I don't think folk music is being threatened by the remix market or any other type of music. This whole thing about one type of music being threatened by other needs to stop. Folk music has been in existence for thousands of years and it is well appreciated and loved in India and overseas," said Swaroop.## He had been part of "Indian Idol" season 5 and thinks that folk music is a way of connecting with god. "Different kinds of music cater to different kinds of taste, there are rap, classic, rock, folk, fusion, filmy songs, all of which exist because people love them. I don't think folk music is threatened by anything. Folk music is a way of connecting with god. It has been here from long before and will remain till long after," he said.## Swaroop Khan says "Indian Idol 5" changed his perception about singing.## He also talked about his childhood dream of becoming a singer. He said: "Some people are forced into their respective professions, but as far as I can remember, I'd always wanted to be a singer. Reality TV is the new talent factory for Bollywood music

New Delhi, March 1 (IANS) Singing-based reality shows have been going on for years and have given some gems to the industry such as Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh and Neha Kakkar. Such shows have proven to be great platforms for aspiring playback singers but it's very rare that as many as four contestants of a show get picked by Bollywood while the competition is still on. ## That just happened in the recently concluded "Indian Idol 11". While Sunny Hindustani, Rohit Raut, Jannabi Das and Ankona Mukherjee were all vying for the coveted title, they got the ticket to Bollywood even before the show concluded in February. ## Sunny, who also lifted the "Indian Idol" trophy, has started rolling in Bollywood. He was spotted by well known composer-singer Shankar Mahadevan during the show and as they say, rest is history. Sunny, the shoeshine youngster from Bathinda in Punjab, went behind the microphone with Shankar for the song "Jugnu" from Kangana Ranaut-starrer "Panga". The young singer also sang "Rom rom" for composer Shamir Tandon for the film "The Body", starring Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor. He is now looking forward to record a song with his former judge Himesh Reshammiya. ## "I used to think that there would be a day when my songs would feature in films...During the show only, I got to sing in such big movies and for big stars. I can't express how happy I am. The credit goes to the people who prayed for me and voted for me," Sunny told IANS. Along with him, Rohit and Ankona have also been given music offers by Himesh. ## "I have always believed that there is a place for each one of them as far as singers are concerned and I have been always supporting good talent on reality shows and giving them break in films whether it's Darshan Raval, Mohammed Irfan or Sunny, Rohit and Ankona. As far as the music industry is concerned, there is so much work and since each singer has his or her own zone and range, I don't feel that anyone will be deprived of work if he or she has talent which is great and unique. I also feel that for the singers to survive longer, they need to not depend on composers but they should start composing songs for their voices," Himesh told IANS. ## Jannabi also walked home with a music contract by "Zingaat" hitmakers Ajay-Atul. ## What's more? Music label giant T-Series took the plunge in reality shows this year and signed on Sunny. ## "If you look around, each and every person is filled with talent whether it's singing, dancing, art, history or acting. 'Indian Idol' is one such place that gives a huge platform for upcoming singers. Since the time my father established T-Series, we have believed and tried to bring forth new talent via our music label. We are completely into helping new singers nurture and explore their talents via our platform," Bhushan Kumar, Chairman and managing director, T-Series, told IANS. ## "Sunny will be singing a song in one of our films that's under production and then hopefully with audiences' love, we will collaborate on more songs together. He is an amazing talent," he added. ## In the past also, some of the reality show contestants got absorbed in the industry but this year, it seems like Bollywood is taking an extra step in making dreams of reality show singers come true. ## "We as an industry are not trying to create a trend. Our industry has always been welcoming new talent be it actors, writers, directors, filmmakers or music artistes. It's our responsibility to help fresh talent reach out to our audiences. We get a chance to meet and know singers via reality shows, concerts, YouTube videos, and other sources, I consider it as my father's and my vision to give them a platform to grow and nourish their talent," said Kumar. ## Darshan, former participant of "India's Raw Star", got his Bollywood break in 2015 with Salman Khan-starrer "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo". Since then he has given Bollywood hits like "Chogada", "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga" and "Odhani". He feels that reality TV shows are like national level competitions. ## "When you participate in a reality show, you overcome a big struggle. Like in sports events, there is state level and national level. Similarly, I consider reality TV shows as national level competitions. Contestants are already sorted out and taken in reality shows," the singer told IANS. ## "Composers and people can watch you and listen to your voice. That's why reality show contestants have got offers in the past also. They are helpful for everybody." ## But the journey doesn't end there. ## "You have to keep working hard, no matter what.
