Box Office: 'The Marvels' Scores Low Opening Day In India

Mumbai, November 11 - Marvel Studios' latest superhero movie The Marvels, a sequel to the record-breaking 2019 film "Captain Marvel" opened to one of the lowest numbers in India for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title. ## Directed by Nia DaCosta, "The Marvels" opening in India is easily the lowest since the introduction of the MCU's Multiverse Saga back in 2021. The Brie Larson-led movie scored approximately 2.50 crores net in India in all versions, opening below "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" which scored approx. 3 crores net in 2021. ## Marvel Movies historically have done well at the Indian box office as six films have scored over 100 crores net collection. Los Angeles, July 30 - Marvel Studios' next theatrical tentpole "The Marvels" is getting ready to release in November this year. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the movie is the sequel to "Captain Marvel" (2019), which grossed over $1.10 billion at the global box office. It is the first female-led superhero movie to top a billion dollars at the box office.## "The Marvels" is expected to be another money spinner for Marvel and Disney, however, it will have to perform exceptionally well to top come close to its predecessor. In a major setback to the film, it won't be playing in the IMAX format due to Warner Bros. After pushing to 2023, "The Marvels" is now swapping the release with "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in 2023, confirmed by Disney. ## "The Marvels", the sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel", was originally due to open in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023, after getting pushed from November 2022, and "Ant-Man 3", was set to open on July 28, 2023. Instead, the "Ant-Man" sequel will now debut in Feb. while "The Marvels" shifted to July 2023. ## According to Variety, this was a matter of "Ant-Man 3" simply being further along in its creative process than "The Marvels", as the former has wrapped principal photography while "The Marvels" still has a bit more to go. Meanwhile, in between "Ant-Man 3", and "The Marvels", Marvel Studios' other big theatrical release in 2023, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3", will be released as originally scheduled on May 5.## "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" is expected to continue the multiverse storyline launched with the 2021 Disney+ series "Loki". Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer will be reprising their roles along with the return of director Peyton Reed. Jonathan Majors will play the main villain and a variant of his “Loki” character, Kang the Conqueror. ## On the other hand, "The Marvels" is set to tie in with two Disney+ shows: 2021's "WandaVision", and the upcoming "Ms. Marvel". Brie Larson is reprising her role as Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers), with Nia DaCosta returning as director. It will also feature Iman Vellani, who will be seen playing the lead role in the series "Ms. Marvel" as Captain Marvel superfan Kamala Khan.## Stay tuned...
