Box Office: 'Superman' Emerges Number 1 Movie of the Weekend Worldwide; Soars To $217 Million Opening Weekend

Los Angeles, July 14 - James Gunn scores another win with his comic book movie as Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios' Superman was the number one movie at the worldwide box office of the weekend (July 11-13) after the mighty opening of over $200 million. ## The first film in Peter Safran and James Gunn-headed DC Studios Phase I - "Gods and Monsters", Superman topped studios' conservative projections by a good margin at the domestic (North America) box office, but fell slightly below the projection overseas. ## Superman's Domestic, Overseas, and Worldwide Opening Weekend Collection ## The superhero movie, fronted by David Corenswet, stars as Man of Steel aka Superman, had a very good opening weekend domestically, grossing a solid $125 million over 3-day weekend, including Thursday previews. This makes it the biggest solo Superman opener, beating Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" (2013), which opened to $116.6 million. ## Among the DC comics' movies, Superman had the 6th biggest start domestically, between "Suicide Squad" ($133.6 million) and "Man of Steel" ($116.6 million). Los Angeles, June 20 - Director James Gunn's Superman is possibly looking to score the biggest opening for a solo Superman movie at the domestic box office after the superhero movie arrived on tracking three weeks before the release. ## Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman is the first movie under the new DC Studios, headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Directed by Gunn, the movie is hot in the trade with a record opening in sight. ## According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is tracking to open in the $135 million range at the domestic (North America) box office. The projected figures are from the leading tracking service, the National Research Group, as per THR. ## NRG always provides a range in addition to a solo number; in this case, the range for Superman's domestic opening is $125 million to $145 million. The much-awaited prequel isn't coming to theaters anytime soon as it has been delayed by a year to May 24, 2024, by Warner Bros. ## Touted to be Australia's biggest production ever, the spin-off was originally slated for June 2023 release with George Miller is returning to write and direct the film. The production of "Furiosa" will cost at least $350M AUD into the local economy and is expected to create 850 jobs. The filming is expected to begin next year in New South Wales and it will be produced by George Miller and Doug Mitchell. ## Anya Taylor-Joy, the "The Queen's Gambit" star, will be playing the title role of Imperator Furiosa in the prequel, instead of Charlize Theron who originated this role in "Fury Road". The prequel will also star Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in prominent roles.## "Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the most celebrated films at the Oscars. It got 10 nominations in the Oscars 2016 including Best Picture and Miller as director and went on win 6 Oscars. It was also commercially successful with a worldwide gross collection of over $375 million in a budget of around $160 million. ## The original Mad Max movie starred Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton.
