Kantara Reigns Supreme in 2025: How This Blockbuster Achieved Unprecedented Success While Other Big Releases Struggled to Leave a Mark

The year 2025 witnessed a remarkable surge of South Indian films reaching Hindi-speaking audiences, but among them, Kantara stood out as the true phenomenon. Earning ₹656 crore worldwide(As of Now), with ₹155.35 crore (As of Now)coming from its Hindi release alone, driven by strong word-of-mouth, the essence of the story infused every small cultural nuances that connected the audience irrespective of language. Its compelling narrative and relatable characters turned it into a pan-India experience, setting benchmarks for Hindi-dubbed releases. While Kantara dominated, other releases like Coolie, Game Changer, and Mirai achieved only moderate results in Hindi markets. Coolie collected ₹37.23 crore in Hindi, supported by pre-release hype, a high-profile cast, and action-packed promotions. Game Changer earned ₹32.93 crore, contributing about 17.7% to its worldwide total of ₹186.28 crore, thanks to star power, fan anticipation, and premiere shows. Similarly, Mirai, with a pan-India cast and mythological-fantasy storyline, garnered ₹16.85 crore in Hindi from its ₹144.02 crore worldwide total. While these films had niche appeal, repeat viewings, and targeted promotions that helped them sustain for a few weeks, they could not replicate the kind of Hindi market success Kantara enjoyed. Films like Lokah Chapter 1 (₹3.74 crore) and They Call Him OG (₹3.32 crore) performed modestly, maintaining presence in select multiplexes. While films such as Coolie, Game Changer, and Mirai managed moderate collections, none could match the impact of Kantara across the northern and central belt audiences. Despite having pan-India casts, high-octane action, and visually impressive sequences, these films fell short of truly resonating with viewers. Their performance highlights that star power or production scale alone is not enough to guarantee widespread success. To achieve blockbuster status beyond the South, a film must combine compelling storytelling with cultural relatability, emotional depth, and narratives that transcend linguistic boundaries. Strong promotions, word-of-mouth momentum, and strategic release planning are important, but the core of a hit lies in connecting with audiences on an emotional and experiential level"”something Kantara accomplished with remarkable finesse. Future filmmakers aiming for pan-India success must focus on stories that engage viewers beyond spectacle, creating immersion, relatability, and lasting impact. Pawan Kalyan"™s Biggest Blockbuster They Call Him OG Gets Its OTT Premiere Date

Hyderabad, October 14 - Powerstar Pawan Kalyan"™s gangster action thriller They Call Him OG is all set for its digital premiere. Directed by Sujeeth, the high-octane entertainer is nearing the end of its theatrical run after emerging as the biggest grosser of Pawan Kalyan's career at the worldwide box office. Produced by DVV Entertainment, They Call Him OG has grossed approximately 290 crore globally so far, and will miss the 300 crore milestone. Despite that, the film has turned out to be a strong box office success, marking Pawan Kalyan's first 200-crore film and his most successful outing in years. According to the latest reports, the movie will begin streaming on Netflix from October 23 in all languages. Having been released in theatres on September 25, the film follows the standard 28-day theatrical window before heading to digital platforms. The South Indian films continue to stick with a 4-week theatrical window despite the criticism from the trade and media, as they believe the short window is not sufficient, as it cuts short the full box office potential of a movie. The film stars Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, alongside an ensemble cast including Emraan Hashmi (in his Telugu film debut), Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy, Prakash Raj, Abhimanyu Singh, Sudev Nair and Harish Uthaman. Hyderabad, October 1 - Power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action drama They Call Him OG continues its decent run at the worldwide box office after the good opening weekend. Having already become the biggest and first 200 crores gross of the Telugu superstar, Sujeeth's directorial has now shattered a record for Telugu cinema this year. On its first Wednesday (7th day), They Call Him OG officially surpassed the collections of Venkatesh Daggubati's Sankranthiki Vasthunam (255.20 crores), making it the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year at the worldwide box office. The achievement further strengthens Pawan Kalyan's dominance at the box office with this film, which has easily been his most hyped in recent times. They Call Him OG opened to record-breaking numbers and sustained decently since that, drawing audiences across both domestic and overseas markets. The film's strong storyline, coupled with Pawan Kalyan"™s charismatic performance and Sujeeth"™s stylish direction, has helped it maintain momentum on a decent level. This consistency has now placed it at the very top of the Telugu box office for 2025, a spot previously held by the Sankranthi blockbuster Sankranthiki Vasthunam. They Call Him OG has not only redefined expectations for Telugu cinema this year but also added another feather to Pawan Kalyan"™s illustrious career. Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG Scored A Good First Weekend: On Course To Emerge As A Success Story

Hyderabad, September 29 "“ Power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action drama They Call Him OG has had a big first weekend at the worldwide box office. The film, directed by Sujeeth, has grossed an impressive 228 crore in just four days, consolidating its position as one of the biggest openers of 2025. After the huge opening day, the film maintained a decent hold over the weekend, with a natural dip in collections across both domestic and overseas markets. It has already become the highest-grossing film and the first 200 crores grosser of Pawan Kalyan's career in its opening stretch, underlining his enduring star power and massive fan following. As per the trade estimates, They Call Him OG needs to collect around 300 crore worldwide to break even and be termed a box office hit. They Call Him OG Hits 200 Crore Worldwide: First For Pawan Kalyan

Hyderabad, September 28 "“ Power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action drama They Call Him OG continues its solid run at the global box office. The Sujeeth directorial has now crossed the coveted 200 crore milestone worldwide, marking the first-ever film in Pawan Kalyan's career to achieve this feat. Released with massive hype, the film opened to historic numbers and registered one of the biggest debuts ever for an Indian film. Despite a noticeable dip after the record-breaking start, They Call Him OG managed to hold steady on Saturday, thanks to the superstar's unparalleled fan base and solid performance in the Telugu states. The worldwide collection of the film stands at approximately 200 crores in 3 days. The film's action-heavy narrative and stylish presentation have clicked with the audience, while Pawan Kalyan"™s commanding screen presence has been the driving force behind its box office run so far. Its performance in overseas markets has also contributed significantly to the overall tally, with the 3-day overseas cum stands at around 55 crores. They Call Him OG Becomes Pawan Kalyan's Biggest Grosser In 2 Days

Hyderabad, September 27 - After the record-breaking opening, power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action drama They Call Him OG witnessed a big drop on its second day, but the hold was good enough to make it the career biggest grosser of the superstar. Directed by Sujeeth, the film stormed the global box office with an opening of 144 crores worldwide (including premieres), marking not only Pawan Kalyan's career-best start but also one of the highest openings for an Indian film ever. However, Friday witnessed a significant drop of nearly 80%, bringing in around 28-29 crores worldwide gross. Despite the fall, OG has already overtaken the lifetime collection of Pawan Kalyan's Bheemla Nayak (₹158.5 crores) in just two days, becoming his biggest grosser. The film now stands at an estimated 172 crores worldwide gross, including approximately 123 crores from India alone. After the massive worldwide pre-sales of 98 crores, OG opened to mixed to positive reviews, which laid the foundation for a big start. However, the bigger-than-expected drop on the second day might have rung alarm bells, even though it is a norm for South Indian films to witness a decline in collection after a strong start. Produced by DVV Entertainment, OG needs to gross around 300 crores worldwide to break even. Ideally, such break-even targets should be achieved easily with the kind of opening OG had, but the same can't be said when it comes to South Indian films, which can take drastic turns, depending on word of mouth. OG, however, has the holiday advantage, which should help it score steadily. But it needs to be seen how things actually pan out in the coming days, which are crucial for its box office success. Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG Beats Rajinikanth's Coolie To Score Biggest Box Office Opening of 2025 In India

Mumbai, September 26 - Power star Pawan Kalyan has unleashed a box office storm with his gangster action drama They Call Him OG. The film has opened to record-breaking numbers domestically, registering the biggest opening of 2025, surpassing superstar Rajinikanth's Coolie, which belongs to a similar action-packed genre. Directed by Sujeeth, They Call Him OG scored an estimated 100 crore gross on its opening day at the Indian box office, including around 25 crore from premiere shows alone. This stellar start has eclipsed Coolie, which debuted with approximately 77 crore gross just last month. In terms of records, OG now holds the seventh-biggest opening ever for a Telugu film and the eighth-biggest for an Indian movie in the domestic market. In the Telugu states, the film has registered the third-highest opening day, trailing only behind RRR, starring Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, and Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule. Meanwhile, at the worldwide box office, OG has grossed around 140 crores, which is in the same range as Jr. NTR's Devara (142 crores) and Thalapathy Vijay's Leo (142.90 crores), featuring among the top 10 biggest Indian openers globally. It has beaten Prabhas' Saaho (130 crores). With this phenomenal start, OG is set to become Pawan Kalyan's highest-grossing film ever as early as its second day, surpassing Bheemla Nayak (158.50 crore lifetime). Needless to say, the film also marks the actor's biggest-ever opening, comfortably beating his earlier release Hari Hara Veera Mallu. Stay tuned...

They Call Him OG Opens to Massive Collections: Pawan Kalyan vs Emraan Hashmi Sets Pan-India Buzz

They Call Him OG, the highly anticipated gangster action film, stormed into theatres worldwide on 25 September 2025 and has already made waves with record-breaking collections. Directed by Sujeeth and produced by DVV Danayya under DVV Entertainment, the film stars Pawan Kalyan in the lead role of Ojas Gambheera "œOG," a fearsome gangster who resurfaces in 1993 Mumbai after a decade-long disappearance to settle old scores. The movie has a stellar cast, including Priyanka Mohan as Dr Kanmani, Prakash Raj, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy, Shaam, Harish Uthaman, Rahul Ravindran, and Jackie Shroff in a cameo. With Thaman S handling the music and Ravi K. Chandran alongside Manoj Paramahamsa behind the camera, OG is mounted on a grand scale, running for about 154 minutes and certified A by the CBFC for its high-octane violence. ##One of the film"™s biggest talking points is the Telugu cinema debut of Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi. Known for his intense performances in Hindi films, Hashmi steps into uncharted territory with OG, playing the antagonist Omi Bhau. His role is positioned as the perfect counterweight to Pawan Kalyan"™s OG, setting up a high-voltage hero-versus-villain dynamic that has already become the centrepiece of fan discussions. Industry analysts note that Hashmi's entry into Telugu films is significant not just because of his star value in Bollywood, but also because it signals the increasing pan-Indian appeal of Telugu cinema. By pitting him against a massive star like Pawan Kalyan, the makers have ensured nationwide interest in the film, with Hindi belt audiences equally curious about the clash. His portrayal of Omi Bhau has been described in media reports as menacing, stylish, and crucial in raising the stakes of the narrative. This crossover has also been highlighted in promotional campaigns, further boosting the film"™s reach across North and South India. ##The box office response has validated the hype. Early trade reports suggest that the film collected around 100 crores gross in India and 150 crores worldwide. Advance bookings were extraordinary, with nearly 98 crore gross worldwide for the opening day. Overseas, particularly in North America, the film set new benchmarks by becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2025 from its premiere shows alone and securing the 4th biggest Telugu premiere day ever in the US market, ahead of recent blockbusters like Devara: Part 1 and Salaar: Part 1. ##The combination of Pawan Kalyan"™s stardom and Emraan Hashmi"™s fresh presence has been a huge driver of buzz. For Telugu audiences, the excitement of seeing a Bollywood actor in such a powerful antagonist"™s role adds novelty, while Hindi-speaking viewers are keen to see Hashmi in a new cinematic landscape. The film"™s producers have reportedly spent lavishly to stage confrontations between the two stars, ensuring that their rivalry becomes the selling point of OG. Industry observers also see this as part of a larger trend of Telugu filmmakers roping in popular Bollywood actors to appeal to a pan-Indian audience, much like how Prithviraj Sukumaran in Salaar and Sanjay Dutt in KGF 2 boosted those films"™ reach. ##With a confirmed sequel (They Call Him OG 2) already in the works and references in the film hinting at a shared universe with Sujeeth"™s earlier film Saaho, the future of the franchise looks bright. For Emraan Hashmi, this debut not only widens his fan base into the South but also opens doors for more pan-Indian projects. For Pawan Kalyan, it reinforces his box office dominance, showing that even amid his political commitments, his star power continues to draw record crowds. ##In short, They Call Him OG is not just a big win for Pawan Kalyan"™s career but also a landmark moment for Emraan Hashmi, whose Telugu debut has added a new dimension to his career and brought a fresh spark to Telugu cinema. With box office numbers climbing rapidly, the film is expected to be one of the year"™s biggest successes, and the Pawan-Emraan face-off is likely to be remembered as one of the most talked-about on-screen rivalries in recent Telugu film history.

Pawan Kalyan's OG Director Sujeeth Joins SS Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel, and Lokesh Kanagaraj In The Back-To-Back 100 Crore Openers

Hyderabad, September 25 - Scoring 100 crore worldwide on the very first day is one of the toughest milestones in Indian cinema. Though the milestone is now not out of reach, only a handful of films have achieved that, and only 4 directors have managed to achieve this back-to-back. Director Sujeeth, who has patiently worked on superstar Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG after Prabhas-fronted Saaho, has joined the elite league of SS Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel, and Lokesh Kanagaraj in delivering back-to-back 100 crores openers at the worldwide box office. 1. Lokesh Kanagaraj "“ Leo (2023), Coolie (2025) Lokesh has become the face of Tamil cinema's new-age mass entertainers. After Thalapathy Vijay's Leo scored a 140 crore+ opening, the mavrick filmmaker followed it up with superstar Rajinikanth's Coolie, which became the first Tamil movie to take the opening of 150+ crores worldwide. 4. Sujeeth "“ Saaho (2019), They Call Him OG (2025) Sujeeth surprised the industry with Prabhas-starrer action thriller Saaho's 125+ crore global debut and has now repeated the feat with superstar Pawan Kalyan's gangster action thriller They Call Him OG. They Call Him OG Becomes Pawan Kalyan's Biggest Opener With Advance Booking

Hyderabad, September 24 - Power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action thriller They Call Him OG is set to storm the box office. The film has been receiving an exceptional response in pre-sales, not just in India but also in international markets. Directed by Sujeeth, They Call Him OG still has a few hours left for the release, and even before that, it has become Pawan Kalyan's biggest opener ever. The advance booking of the film is nearing 75 crores worldwide for the opening day, making it the biggest opener for the superstar. The previous biggest opener of PK was Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which scored approximately 67 crores worldwide on its opening day. OG, meanwhile, is heading towards taking a 2x start of HHVM, with trade believes that it might even take the opening of 150+ crores gross globally. It will be quite astonishing if OG manages to take the opening of 150+ crores, as it will be very close to PK's biggest lifetime worldwide grosser Bheemla Nayak (158.50 crores). Irrespective of what the opening will be, one thing is clear that OG will become the actor's biggest grosser within two days, which will probably be a record for a film featuring an A-lister. OG is heading towards scoring 90-100 crores pre-sales for the opening day. So far, it has grossed approximately 45 crores in India and 30 crores overseas, including the premiere shows. The pre-sales momentum has been excellent for OG, which is easily the most hyped film of PK in recent times. Produced by DVV Entertainment, OG stars Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, alongside Emraan Hashmi (in his Telugu film debut), Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy and Prakash Raj. The film revolves around a gangster named Ojas Gambheera who returns to Mumbai following his ten-year disappearance to kill another crime boss, Omi Bhau. Stay tuned...
