Box Office: 'Despicable Me'/'Minions' Becomes The First Animated Film Franchise To Reach $5 Billion Globally
Mumbai, July 15 - Universal Pictures/Illumination's Despicable Me/Minions becomes the first animated film franchise to reach $5 billion at the worldwide box office after the latest blockbuster Despicable Me 4 crossed $440 million. ## The Despicable Me franchise has 6 films so far, including the two prequel Minions movies (Minions, and Minions: The Rise of Gru). These 6 films have combined grossed $5+ billion, making it the first animated franchise to reach the milestone, according to Deadline. It was, however, already the highest-grossing animated franchise.## Minions (2015) is the highest-grossing film in the franchise so far with a worldwide gross collection of $1.15 billion, followed by Despicable Me 3 (2017) with $1.03 billion, Despicable Me 2 (2013) with $971 million, Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) with $940 million, Despicable Me (2010) with $543 million, and Despicable Me 4 (2024) is currently at the last spot with $441 million. ## News of the $5 billion achievement comes as Universal last week dated Minions 3 for release on June 30, 2027. That film will be written by Brian Lynch (Minions, The Secret Life of Pets films) and directed by Academy Award nominee Pierre Coffin, the filmmaker behind the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions movie.## Stay tuned...
