Box Office: 'Joker 2' Scores $120+ Million Worldwide Opening; Bombs In North America

Los Angeles, October 7 - Warner Bros. Pictures' high-profile sequel Joker: Folie à Deux bombed at the domestic (North America) box office with a shocking $40 million opening weekend. This is less than half of what the first movie grossed in the first weekend ($96 million) in 2019. ## Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker 2 is having terrible reviews all around from critics as well as audiences. It is the first comic book movie in history to score 'D' CinemaScore while Rotten Tomatoes score is also around just 30% for both, critics and audiences. ## While the domestic opening of the film is a disaster with a rebound unlikely, Joker 2 has a respectable overseas start in the projected range. At the international box office, the Joaquin Phoenix/Lady Gaga-starrer grossed $81 million from 70 markets in the 6-day opening weekend. ## The UK was the biggest international market for the sequel with an $8 million debut, followed by Germany ($6.9 million), Italy ($5.6 million), Mexico ($5.5 million) and France ($5 million). In India, the movie remained poor with approximately $1.65 million (14 crores gross) after a 5-day weekend.## The worldwide opening of Joker 2 is $121 million which is poor. Joker in 2019 scored a worldwide opening of $247 million, leading its way to a $1+ billion finish. The movie is a sequel to a billion-dollar grosser, so there were high expectations from Joker 2.## However, unlike the high expectations, Joker 2 is turning out to be a nightmare for the studio and the talent involved, heading towards an all-time disaster at the box office. Los Angeles, September 12 - Warner Bros. Pictures' sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller Joker is hitting theatres this October and it seems the hype is fading away after the recent screening where the movie received average reviews. ## As for the box office, the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led Joker: Folie à Deux is tracking to open less than its predecessor at the domestic box office. According to Deadline, the blockbuster sequel is projected to open with $70 million - $80 million in its domestic (North America) opening weekend. ## If Joker 2 opens to the projected lines, it would be $26 million less than Joker which scored $96.2 million in the domestic weekend, as per Box Office Mojo. A couple of weeks ago, the movie was projected to open with $100+ million, which is now looking difficult, per the latest projection. ## Joker 2 currently has a 62% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which, interestingly, is similar to the original movie after its Venice and TIFF premiere. Los Angeles, April 18 (IANS) "Joker" star Joaquin Phoenix was almost cast as Batman way back in the nineties.## After George Clooney's 1997 outing as the caped crusader in "Batman & Robin" flopped, "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky was tipped to direct a new Batman film, and Phoenix was his first choice for the role.## Aronofsky said that he wanted to re-invent Batman and suggested Phoenix as the leading role, reports aceshowbiz.com.## "The studio wanted Freddie Prinze Jr. and I wanted Joaquin Phoenix. It was a different time. The Batman I wrote was definitely a way different type of taking than they ended up making," Aronofsky tells Empire of his plans for "Batman: Year One".## He added: "The Batman that was out before me was 'Batman & Robin', the famous one with the nipples on the Batsuit, so I was really trying to undermine that, and reinvent it.
