FWICE Demands Apology From Vir Das For His 'I Come From Two Indias' Monologue

Mumbai, November 18 - Actor-comedian Vir Das is getting into trouble for his monologue "I come from two Indias", which he recited at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, a few days ago. An FIR against him has been registered in Mumbai, and now, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) had demanded an apology from him for his remarks.## Das, in his 6-minute satire video, talked about the duality of the country as he touched upon topical issues like the battle against COVID-19, incidents of rapes, farmers protests, a crackdown against comedians and petrol prices. ## B N Tiwari, President of FWICE, said that the federation will not let Das work in the industry until he apologises for his remark. "What he said was disgusting. We won't support him unless he apologises. Wherever he shoots, we will try to stop him, continue with our non-cooperation with him. For us, the nation is first. You can't defame the nation to earn money. We strongly object to what he said". ## "He should publicly apologise in front of the entire nation, there is no other solution. Vir Das on spreading smiles amid COVID-19 crisis

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) Actor-comedian Vir Das wants to spread smiles to raise funds amid the COVID-19 crisis, and he believes in fighting back with a sense of humor.## Vir is raising funds through his special "Vir Das At Home" gigs, where he performs for an audience online. The funds raised from the shows go to different causes.## Asked about the need to spread laughter, Vir told IANS: "What's the alternative?"## "That's the way I look at it. I get a fair amount of hatred every day on Twitter. I have lots of people telling me ‘oh you are an anti-national', you are insensitive, inappropriate, disrespectful… I respond by asking ‘what's the alternative'. Is the alternative not to smile? Is the alternative not to crack the joke? Is the alternative not to laugh? I don't think it is a good alternative in these times," he added.## Vir continued: "Right now you have two choices -- You can let coronavirus get you down or you can fight back with your sense of humor. I chose option B.## Vir, who is seen in Netflix's web show "Hasmukh", says that he is "digging" the lockdown period.## "We recently announced six shows and the proceeds of all the shows will go to different charities. I am spending my time trying to raise money to battle the virus… When you donate, it's a start and you can continue it by raising more money. So, I am trying to raise as much money as I can," he said.## For the comedy special, he sits in front of a computer and connects with his audiences.## "Nobody likes sitting in front of a computer for one hour. It's not the ideal environment. But it has raised money, and I will continue doing that," he stressed.## On the work front, the actor is currently seen in the Netflix series, "Hasmukh", which he has co-created and written with Nikkhil Advani.## "Hasmukh" is about an ambitious comic who realizes that the only way he can "kill it on stage" is if he "kills off stage".## Talking about the challenges he faced while working on the show, Vir said: "The challenge was to convince people to let me do a show like this. I don't think had I not written it, I would get to be a part of it in this capacity as a leader of the show.## "I had to create the opportunity. What helped was that I did a short film with Milap Zaveri titled ‘Raakh'. That was dark. So, when that came out and got a good response, then I thought that it was a good time to go out in the market with an idea like that."## Stay tuned...

Nikkhil Advani: Technicians to superstars, everyone will re-evaluate post COVID-19

Mumbai, April 19 (IANS) Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, who had several productions in the pipeline when the COVID-19 lockdown was announced, says that the whole process of budgeting and releasing a film will change once this phase ends, keeping in mind social distancing and viewing habit of the audience.## Asked about how he is holding up amid the lockdown, the founder of Emmay Entertainment told IANS: "We had three films and six shows in the pipeline. Everything is on hold now. Arjun (Kapoor) and Rakul's film was on the floor. We were also shooting two films -- 'Satyameva Jayate 2' and 'Mumbai Diaries'. I am doing a post (production) of ‘Indoo Ki Jawani'."## "As a producer, of course, I am affected, but what I am trying to do is, instead of thinking negatively, I am working with my writers and developing scripts. I am trying to finish the post-production of those projects that we can be sitting in the house" shared Nikkhil.## Under his banner, Nikkhil delivered films like "D-Day", "Satyameva Jayate", "Airlift", "Batla House", and ‘Marjaavaan" among others. He has also produced the Netflix show "Hasmukh", featuring Vir Das.## Talking about one of the biggest problems the shooting process will face in near future, Nikkhil said: "Maintaining social distancing on a shooting floor is tough and that we have to incorporate in our lifestyle, in our work culture. From budgeting to promoting and processing of a film, everything is going to change post lockdown. I do not think the formula we were working with for long will be relevant anymore."## Citing an example, he said: "Even if we want to release a film, will people go to the theatre to watch it? Social distancing is one factor, home entertainment through OTT platforms is another. Of course, it is more convenient. From technicians to superstars, everyone has to sit down and re-evaluate. We are all going to look at it as ‘pre-COVID 19' and ‘post-COVID 19'. Nothing is going to be the same!"## Does he have any solution in mind? "We cannot fight the change. We have to change ourselves to deal with it. Every film cannot be an event film. There are high-budget, mid-budget, and small budget films. We plan the budget based on the subject and stars coming on board for the film. As the viewing habit of our audience is changing, we have to choose the platform of release and the story accordingly. That will surely change the budgeting of a film. The definition of stardom will also change. Running a production house is not easy, and all I am doing is preparing myself to deal with the new age that is coming!" Nikkhil signed off.## Stay tuned...

Vir Das takes cue from 'desi' stand-ups for 'Hasmukh'

Mumbai, April 16 (IANS) Actor-comedian Vir Das says preparing for his starring role in upcoming show "Hasmukh" was the best part of working in the project.## He "consciously watched" a lot of shows by local stand-up comics to get his character in the Netflix show right.## "A lot of my research had started when I was writing the show. But when I began my prep as an actor, I consciously watched a lot of shows by local stand-up comics," Vir said.## "I had finished 'Jestination Unknown' around the same time so by virtue of that I'd learned that humor is rooted in local styles and culture. There is more banter. The stories are intimate. I used all of that in Hasmukh's set. Watching more and more comics nudged me towards finding the right persona for 'Hasmukh'," he added.## Talking about his character, Vir explained: "He is essentially an introvert and his stage person is a lot more open. I chalked out everything that Hasmukh would want to include in his set, figured a delivery style for him and made it entirely different from what he is off stage. The prep was actually the best part of the show for me. I enjoyed it to bits."## "Hasmukh" is about an ambitious comic on a mission to prove to his mentor that he is a good comedian. It shows how every dream comes with a price and Hasmukh (Vir Das) realizes that the only way to "kill it on stage", is if he "kills off stage".## Also featuring Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Amrita Bagchi, Suhail Nayyar, Inaamulhaq and Raza Murad, "Hasmukh" is directed by Nikhil Gonsalves and will release on April 17. The Netflix show is produced for Applause Entertainment by Emmay Entertainment.## Stay tuned...

Nikkhil Advani: Vir Das will be interesting to watch in 'Hasmukh'

Mumbai, April 9 (IANS) Nikkhil Advani's upcoming show "Hasmukh" features Vir Das as a reluctant killer, and the Bollywood filmmaker says people will be surprised to watch the popular stand-up comedian in his new avatar.## In the trailer of the Netflix show, Vir is a comedian who needs to kill someone before performing on stage. As an individual, he does not like the whole act of killing people, but he has no other way to get the right kick to perform as a comedian on stage. He battles the dilemma.## "I think the audience will find it interesting to watch Vir in that avatar. No one can imagine Vir like that, because even in real life he is a stand-up comedian. He has acted really well. The story is of a reluctant killer. It is a fight between morals and ambitions," Advani said.## The show is directed by Nikhil Gonsalves and also features Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Ravi Kishan, Amrita Bagchi, Suhail Nayyar, Inaamulhaq and Raza Murad.## According to the filmmaker, he always wanted to collaborate with the celebrated stand-up comedian. "Vir and I always wanted to collaborate. He came up with the idea, and I suggested making the story a little darker. So, we developed the script accordingly. We have got a great casting with some of the finest actors. Things just fell in place nicely," said Advani, about the show which releases on April 17.## Asked if digital release is an advantage during the time of lockdown, Advani replied: "It is a big advantage for us that the show is releasing now on Netflix when people are sitting at home and consuming a lot of digital content. But, it was always meant to release at this point in time. It was planned to release in April."## Stay tuned...

Vir Das excited to be back in fiction space with a strange character

Mumbai, April 3 (IANS) Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das, who is looking forward to his upcoming web series "Hasmukh", says performing in front of a live audience is extremely different from being in a fictional film or series.## In the show, he will be seen as Hasmukh, who works hard to bring a smile to everyone's face.## "Performing in front of a live audience is extremely different from being in a fictional film or series. I'm back on screen playing a strange and unusual character, so I'm excited," Vir said.## The trailer of the show was released on Friday. The trailer should give you a sneak peek into what I'm talking about, but just wait and watch!"## Also featuring Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Ravi Kishan, Amrita Bagchi, Suhail Nayyar, Inaamulhaq and Raza Murad, "Hasmukh" is directed by Nikhil Gonsalves and will release on April 17.## The Netflix show is produced for Applause Entertainment by Emmay Entertainment.## Stay tuned...

Lockdown diaries: Vir Das adds 'some laughs' with new comedy series

Mumbai, March 26 (IANS) Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das has released his new comedy series "Bright Side With Vir Das" amidst the 21-day lockdown due to COVID-19. He says this is his way of adding some laughs into lives of the people.## Focusing on the bright side of being at home, the new series sees Vir discussing everything from balconies to our warped political allegiances and how irrelevant it has become now.## Taking the darkest thoughts going on in people's heads and turning them into something funny, he attempts to lighten the situation.## "Staying at home for the last few days has been testing for everyone. This is my way of adding some laughs into their lives. Laughter opens up people to hope and that's what we need in this phase," Vir said.## "I have taken everything I have been hearing lately - from nannies and dadis claiming that Coronavirus is a result of ya not following their 'nuskas' (tips) to people telling us how we are quarantining comfortably when many in the country can't. It's our attempt to put some perspective in people on how much better we have it, and in a funny fashion tell them to practice social distancing, stay home, be safe. As for the emotional distress, let's laugh a little - shall we?" he added.## The show is available on Vir Das official YouTube channel and on Vir's IGTV.## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.
