Year Ender 2025: Top 10 Kollywood Films by Box Office Performance

It's a wrap on 2025, and the Kollywood box office has set new benchmarks with a HUGE cumulative total from its top contenders. The ten highest-grossing films of the year alone have raked in over ₹ 1600 crores worldwide, signaling a massively successful run for the industry. While Coolie led this charge with a historic ₹ 518 Cr, the year also saw a healthy number of films crossing the coveted ₹ 100 crore milestone, including GoodBadUgly, Dragon, Vidaamuyarchi and Dude. From big-ticket action extravaganzas to unique concepts, the audience has given a clear verdict. Here's a deep dive into the top 10 Tamil films that made the biggest impact at the box office in 2025. table td { word-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word; } @media (max-width: 480px) { table td:first-child { width: 40% !important; /* give more breathing room */ } } Coolie Director Lokesh Kanagaraj Lead Cast Superstar Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan Worldwide Gross ₹ 518 Cr Verdict Commercial Success Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → When his friend is murdered by a ruthless smuggling syndicate, a former union leader named Deva is forced to confront his violent past and infiltrate the gang to protect his friend's daughter and expose a global human trafficking ring. The story of Coolie's box office is one of two halves. The primary driver for its No. 1 spot was the explosive combination of Rajinikanth's unparalleled star power and Lokesh Kanagaraj's modern filmmaking style, which guaranteed a historic opening weekend. However, the film's biggest hurdle was its own monumental budget. A collection of ₹518 Cr, while huge, was not enough to generate the theatrical profits needed for a clean Hit or Blockbuster tag. In essence, Coolie was a front-loaded success—a commercial win for its producers thanks to pre-release deals, but a theatrical performer that couldn't fully outrun its massive cost. Good Bad Ugly Director Adhik Ravichandran Lead Cast Ajith Kumar, Arjun Das, Trisha Krishnan Worldwide Gross ₹ 248.25 Cr Verdict Hit Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → The plot centers on Ajith Kumar, a retired and notorious gangster known as Red Dragon, who is forced to return to his violent past after his son is wrongfully framed and arrested in Spain. The film's impressive ₹250 Cr worldwide collection stands as a strong testament to Ajith Kumar’s enduring star power. His ability to pull massive audiences ensured the film debuted high on the year-end charts. Powered by solid pre-release buzz and a strong fan following, the movie enjoyed a successful overall run and is regarded as a clear hit. Dragon Director Ashwath Marimuthu Lead Cast Pradeep Ranganathan, Anupama Parameswaran, Kayadu Lohar Worldwide Gross ₹ 150.52 Cr Verdict Blockbuster Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → After being branded a failure by his ex-girlfriend, Ragavan uses forged documents to secure a high-paying job. This deception allows him to live a seemingly successful life until his actions lead to a former classmate's misfortune. Overwhelmed by guilt, Ragavan confesses the truth, goes to prison, and upon release, rebuilds his life honestly as a food delivery agent, ultimately finding redemption and true love. While the top two spots on the list are held by industry titans, the story of the year's most profitable and resounding success belongs to Dragon. Collecting over four times its budget, the film is a bonafide Blockbuster. Vidaamuyarchi Director Magizh Thirumeni Lead Cast Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra Worldwide Gross ₹ 135.65 Cr Verdict Flop Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → Vidaamuyarchi is a thriller about a couple, Arjun and Kayal, whose road trip in Azerbaijan to visit Kayal's parents turns terrifying when she is abducted after a car breakdown. The film follows Arjun as he navigates a dangerous journey to rescue his wife, facing deception and a ruthless gang along the way. While Vidaamuyarchi landed in the year's top 5 thanks to Ajith Kumar's massive opening, it was a significant commercial failure. Its colossal budget of over ₹225 Cr dwarfed its final ₹135.65 Cr collection, leading to substantial losses. The film failed to sustain its run beyond the initial fan-fueled weekend, as negative word-of-mouth about a convoluted screenplay halted its momentum. Dude Director Keerthiswaran Lead Cast Pradeep Ranganathan, Mamitha Baiju, R. Sarathkumar Worldwide Gross ₹ 113.25 Cr Verdict Blockbuster Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → Dude is a romantic comedy about cousins Agan and Kural, whose relationship is complicated when Agan confesses his love for Kural, but then an arranged marriage for Kural with someone else throws their lives into chaos. Agan must then decide between his own love for Kural and Kural's happiness. The year 2025 will be remembered for the phenomenal rise of Pradeep Ranganathan, and Dude is the film that cemented his status as the industry's new golden boy. Following the massive success of Dragon, this film proved his box office draw was no fluke. Collecting nearly four times its modest budget, Dude is another resounding Blockbuster, making Pradeep the only actor of the year to deliver two such profitable ventures. Madharaasi Director A. R. Murugadoss Lead Cast Sivakarthikeyan, Rukmini Vasanth, Vidyut Jammwal Worldwide Gross ₹ 98.48 Cr Verdict Flop Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → An NIA officer recruits Raghuram, a suicidal man suffering from Fregoli delusion, to infiltrate a gun-smuggling syndicate. The film blends high-octane action with Raghuram's psychological struggle as he is manipulated into stopping a dangerous crime lord. Despite the powerhouse combo of A.R. Murugadoss and Sivakarthikeyan, Madharaasi collapsed under its massive ₹180 Cr budget. Failing to cross even the ₹100 Cr mark, it stands as a major commercial disaster, proving that big names cannot save a project when the costs outweigh the content's appeal. Thug Life Director Mani Ratnam Lead Cast Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan Worldwide Gross ₹ 97.25 Cr Verdict Flop Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → Presumed dead, notorious mafia kingpin Rangaraya Sakthivel returns to confront a violent past involving his brother and his adopted son, Amar. The narrative explores a complex father-son dynamic driven by power, betrayal, and revenge. The highly anticipated reunion of the Nayakan duo, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, turned into a colossal box office disaster. Burdened by an astronomical ₹250 Cr budget, the film failed to cross even the ₹100 Cr mark. Despite a star-studded cast including Simbu and Trisha, the film faced outright rejection from the audience. Idly Kadai Director Dhanush Lead Cast Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey Worldwide Gross ₹ 71.86 Cr Verdict Hit Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → Murugan, a third-generation vendor, fights to protect his family's humble legacy, Sivanesan's Idli Kadai, when a corporate gourmet chain opens across the street. It is a battle of tradition and dignity against aggressive commercialism in a small hill town. Dhanush's fourth directorial venture earned strong critical praise for its grounded storytelling and also performed decently at the box office. Despite its steep ₹100 Cr budget, the film’s ₹71.86 Cr gross ensured a respectable run driven by word of mouth. It stands as a well-made film that found its audience and delivered a fair commercial outcome. Retro Director Karthik Subbaraj Lead Cast Suriya, Pooja Hegde Worldwide Gross ₹ 96.97 Cr Verdict Commercial Success Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → Set in the 1990s, former enforcer Paari attempts to leave his violent past behind for a peaceful life with his wife. However, when his history catches up to him, he is forced into exile on a remote island, where he eventually embraces his fighting skills to save the locals from a tyrant. Despite the exciting pairing of Suriya and Karthik Subbaraj, Retro underperformed at the box office. With a modest ₹60 Cr budget, the film grossed ₹96.97 Cr, falling just short of the ₹100 Cr milestone. While the controlled budget prevented a financial disaster, the theatrical returns were minimal for investors. Tourist Family Director Abishan Jeevinth Lead Cast Sasikumar, Simran Worldwide Gross ₹ 86.25 Cr Verdict Blockbuster Check Out the Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown → A Sri Lankan family living illegally in India attempts to build a new life while evading authorities. Their fresh start is threatened when a past connection to a bombing resurfaces, jeopardizing their acceptance in the neighborhood. The Sleeper Hit That Stole the Show - The year's most profitable venture, earning over ₹86 Cr on a meager ₹7 Cr budget. Relying purely on glowing word-of-mouth rather than star power, this grounded drama proved that compelling storytelling and strong performances can triumph over high-budget spectacles.

2025's Surprise Hits:The films that exceeded all box office expectations

A film's box office performance can often be unpredictable. Every year, there are movies that are expected to do huge business, and then there are some which are not expected to draw big crowds to the theaters. Out of these, a few manage to connect with the audience and become unexpected hits. The year 2025 was no different and had its own share of such surprise hits. Let's take a look at the films that surprised everyone this year. Released on July 18, this romantic drama starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda was expected to be a modest success at best. However, its soundtrack became a viral rage on social media weeks before release. The film opened strong at over ₹21 crore but, powered by incredible word-of-mouth from the youth, it showed historic growth, eventually storming past the ₹500 crore mark. It became a cultural phenomenon, proving that a well-made musical love story could still create magic. Some films were expected to be hits, but no one predicted the scale of their success. Vicky Kaushal's historical epic Chhaava, which hit theaters on February 14, was mounted on a massive budget. While a hit was expected, the film's powerful storytelling and patriotic fervor connected so deeply that it went on to gross a colossal ₹850 crore, surprising the trade with its monumental success. Similarly, the pan-India action film Lokah Chapter 1 released on August 28 was a new franchise. It was expected to do well, but its gripping screenplay and stunning action sequences turned it into a monster hit, earning over ₹300 crore and establishing a new cinematic universe. The story of 2025 was also written by regional cinema. The Telugu family entertainer Sankranthiki Vasthunam (January 14) was a festive release that was expected to do well in its home state. However, its heartwarming theme resonated so widely that it became a blockbuster, earning over ₹200 crore. The Tamil industry delivered a string of surprises. Dragon, a Romantic Drama starring Pradeep Ranganathan and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, also punched far above its weight. Its unique concept was a huge draw for young audiences, turning it into a super hit.The quirky comedy Thalaivan Thalaivi connected well with viewers, while the sports drama Bison Kaalamaadan also had a solid run at the box office, turning into a profitable venture. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The Malayalam film Thudarum, a gripping thriller released on April 25, started quietly but became a huge success thanks to rave reviews about its edge-of-the-seat story. Eko also made waves, proving that a strong local story could find a large and appreciative audience, making it one of the region's most successful films. The critically acclaimed drama Rekhachithram became a super-hit thanks to rave reviews. Other films also surprised the audience. The courtroom drama Court: State vs. A Nobody, made on a small budget of just ₹5 crore, became a word-of-mouth success due to its gripping plot. The mythological fantasy Dashavatar also found its audience, becoming another unexpected hit of the year. The success of regional cinema continued across the country. The Assamese film Roi Roi Binale was an emotional event that broke all local records, while the Odia horror-comedy Bou Buttu Bhuta and the Gujarathi drama Umbarro also became major successes in their respective states.

Three Films, Three Blockbusters: Pradeep Ranganathan's Unstoppable Box Office Streak Continues With Dude

Chennai, October 27 - At a time when even top stars are struggling to deliver box office success, there comes a young actor, who debuted as a lead hero a couple of years back and is turning everything into gold he touches. Pradeep Ranganathan is having a dream run at the box office and has emerged as one of Tamil cinema's most bankable stars. The actor-filmmaker, who made his debut as a lead hero with the new-age romantic comedy Love Today in 2022, has now achieved a rare feat, which probably no one had before — three consecutive blockbusters in as many films. His latest outing, Dude, continues to dominate the box office, reaffirming his golden touch. It all began with Love Today, which struck a strong chord with youth audiences for its relatable story and modern take on relationships. The film went on to become a massive blockbuster, grossing around 84 crores worldwide — a staggering figure for a debutant actor. Pradeep not only headlined the film but also directed it, proving his versatility early in his career. He followed that success with Dragon, a coming-of-age comedy-drama that released earlier this year. The film exceeded all expectations, emerging as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2025 with collections crossing 150 crores worldwide. With its emotional depth and youthful energy, Dragon cemented Pradeep's position as a crowd favourite. Now, Dude has turned the actor's success streak into a perfect hat-trick. Currently in its second week, the film has already grossed over 100 crores worldwide and continues to hold strong at the box office. With two 100 crore grossers among his first three films, Pradeep Ranganathan has set a new benchmark for young actors — becoming the first in Tamil cinema to achieve such success so early in his career. The young sensation has one more release to close the year. Director Vignesh Shivan's science fiction romantic comedy, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), is scheduled to release on December 18, 2025. The buzz for the film is good, with promos released so far receiving big thumbs up from viewers. Stay tuned...

Dude vs Dragon: Advance Booking Comparison and Pradeep’s Remarkable Rise

The advance booking trend for Dude and Dragon has sparked noticeable discussion among Tamil cinema audiences, especially with both films carrying significant expectations for different reasons. Dragon, which hit theatres earlier, managed to secure an estimated ₹2 crore in pre-sales ahead of its release. The film’s performance in advance booking reflected decent anticipation, supported by its scale and a fair level of pre-release visibility. It also saw decent traction in urban centres, with steady ticket sales building up closer to release. In contrast, Dude seems to have turned the spotlight firmly towards itself. The film has registered an impressive ₹6.94 crore gross (including block seats) in advance bookings, which is a significant leap compared to Dragon’s numbers. This robust start underlines the growing influence of Pradeep Ranganathan, who plays the lead role in Dude and continues to make a mark in the industry. The enthusiasm surrounding the film can be attributed to his unique appeal among the youth audience and his ability to connect through relatable storytelling. Pradeep’s journey is an inspiring one — from making short films that resonated deeply online to becoming one of Tamil cinema’s most promising young writer-directors. His earlier success with Love Today showcased his knack for blending contemporary themes with emotion and humor, a formula that seems to have strengthened his fan base. The excitement around Dude’s release, coupled with such strong pre-booking numbers, stands as a testament to that curiosity among the audience. While Dragon had shown steady traction during its pre-release phase, Dude’s performance has clearly set a new benchmark in recent times. The advance booking figures not only highlight the audience’s confidence in Pradeep’s brand of cinema but also suggest that Dude could open to a highly encouraging start at the box office.

Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude (2025) Set to Rule the Diwali Box Office?

Pradeep Ranganathan is set to light up the silver screen once again this Diwali with his much-awaited film Dude (2025), directed by Keerthiswaran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. Scheduled to release on October 17, the film has already cleared censor formalities with a U/A certificate and a runtime of 139 minutes. The movie stars Pradeep alongside Mamitha Baiju, with R. Sarathkumar and Rohini in key supporting roles, while the music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar. Dude arrives at a crucial moment in Pradeep’s career — after the phenomenal success of Love Today and Dragon, two films that turned him from a young creative voice into a reliable box-office draw. Pradeep’s rise has been remarkable. His directorial-acting debut Love Today (2022) was a modestly budgeted romantic comedy that became one of the most profitable Tamil films of the year, grossing well beyond expectations through strong word-of-mouth and youth appeal. His follow-up, Dragon (2025), expanded his market reach with a larger budget and a pan-regional release, crossing the ₹100-crore mark worldwide and cementing his position as a star with consistent audience pull. Given this track record, expectations for Dude are naturally sky-high, with fans keen to see if he can complete a hat-trick of hits this Diwali. Dude is said to blend youthful romance with emotional family drama, carrying a multigenerational theme that revolves around the sacred thaali and the relationships it symbolizes. Early reports hint at a storyline that reimagines a young Rajinikanth-like personality through Pradeep’s character, a creative hook that has already generated interest among Tamil audiences. The film’s pre-release business has also been impressive — Netflix has reportedly acquired the digital streaming rights for around ₹25 crore, a deal substantial enough to recover most of the production cost even before its theatrical debut. This ensures the producers are already on safe ground, and the theatrical earnings will primarily benefit distributors and exhibitors. Comparing Dude with Pradeep’s earlier ventures gives some context. Love Today relied heavily on emotional relatability and word-of-mouth, whereas Dragon thrived on scale, music, and spectacle. Dude seems positioned between the two — big enough to feel festive but still grounded in sentiment and humor. The songs released so far, including “Oorum Blood” and “Singari,” have already gained traction online, and Sai Abhyankkar’s energetic score adds freshness to Pradeep’s onscreen persona. The film’s Diwali timing will also test its endurance against competing releases like Bison and other regional titles. With Mythri Movie Makers’ strong distribution network and Pradeep’s growing pan-Indian recognition, Dude could easily dominate multiplex chains in its opening weekend if early reviews are positive. The holiday period offers an added advantage — sustained footfalls through Monday and Tuesday could push its first-week totals far ahead of regular-season openers. Overall, Dude represents a fascinating moment for Tamil cinema — a film that merges the commercial instincts of a star on the rise with the storytelling curiosity of a debutant director. With its pre-sale success, carefully timed release, and built-in goodwill from Pradeep’s previous hits, the movie enters Diwali week as a strong contender for the festival’s biggest box-office performer. Whether it can turn that promise into another record-breaking run will depend on audience response in the first few days. For now, Dude looks well-positioned to extend Pradeep Ranganathan’s box-office streak and possibly crown him as the new Diwali favorite of Tamil cinema. Take a look at the India Gross collection of his previous movies Love Today(2022):₹ 78.55 Cr Dragon(2025): ₹ 117.52 Cr

Dragon Buzz: Director Prashanth Neel Aims For History Beyond KGF and Salaar With Jr. NTR's Film

Hyderabad, August 30 - Director Prashanth Neel is looking to rewrite history with his upcoming film, tentatively titled Dragon with Telugu superstar Jr. NTR. The maverick filmmaker has delivered three back-to-back blockbusters in the KGF films and Salaar, but he aims to take his game to the next level with Dragon. There is no doubt NTR-Neel is among the biggest Indian films in the making, and if the reports are anything to go by, it could become Neel's biggest blockbuster yet. According to a recent report in Hindustan Times, "Prashanth Neel’s next with Jr NTR is his most ambitious and biggest project yet; even bigger than his pan-India blockbusters like KGF and Salaar." Dragon, which is said to be a unique script that hasn't been seen in Indian cinema before, is believed to be a film Neel has dreamt of making from the very beginning, and he found his favourite actor, Jr NTR, to headline this mega movie. The film is being produced by Mythri Movie Makers and NTR Arts, and it is said that there are no budget constraints to mount to film on a scale the filmmaker wants. He is reportedly happy with the way the film is shaping up, as it is progressing beyond what he had even imagined. Dragon has been announced for a June 2026 release worldwide in multiple languages. Surprise Hits of 2025: Low To Mid-Budget Films That Emerged as Winners at the Indian Box Office

Mumbai, August 19 - The year 2025 has been full of surprises at the Indian box office, and there are still five months left. Amid the frenzy of big-budget spectacles in 2025, a group of low to mid budget budget films stunned everyone by not only becoming critical successes but also box office winners. These films, spanning multiple languages and genres, didn't have the advantage of huge star power or massive marketing campaigns. Instead, they relied on storytelling, originality, and strong word-of-mouth to win hearts. Saiyaara (Hindi – Romantic Drama) - No one expected a debutant-led love story to become the biggest romantic hit in years, but Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda's chemistry, Mohit Suri's direction, and Mithoon's soulful music turned Saiyaara into a cultural phenomenon. Made on a budget of around 60 crores, the movie started strongly and exploded eventually as the week progressed, becoming the first Hindi romantic film to cross 300 crores net. Mahavatar Narsimha (Hindi – Animated Devotional Action Drama) - An animated retelling of the Narsimha avatar from the Puranas, Mahavatar Narsimha emerged as a surprise family favourite. Released with little hype and almost zero expectations, it tapped into the growing demand for Indian devotional content. Made on a budget of around 5-10 crores, the film's strong visuals and devotional storytelling led it to cross the 100 crore mark in just 10 days, making it the first Indian animated movie to achieve the feat. Dragon (Tamil – Coming-of-age Comedy Drama) - Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Dragon is the biggest Tamil blockbuster of the year. It is a story about a college dropout who deceptively secures a high-paying job, but is forced to accept a major challenge to avoid being exposed. Made on a budget of around 20 crores, the movie went on to gross around 120 crores in India, as one of the highest-grossing Tamil titles of the year. Tourist Family (Tamil – Comedy Drama) - It is being hailed as one of the most heartwarming stories of the year. The story follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family who, following the Sri Lankan economic crisis, arrive in India in search of a better future. It was made on a budget of around 5 crores, and went on to gross over 70 crores in India, and became a big blockbuster.
