IMDb's Top 10 Highest-Rated Best Picture Oscar Winners

Mumbai, February 13 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the 94th Academy Awards on Tuesday (Feb. 8). Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer "The Power of the Dog" led the show with 12 nominations, including the Best Picture.



This year, the Best Picture category includes 10 films - "The Power of the Dog", "CODA", "Belfast ", "Dune", "King Richard", "West Side Story", "Don't Look Up", "Drive My Car", "Licorice Pizza", and Nightmare Alley. Among these films, "Dune" is one of the highest-rated movies of 2021 while "Don't Look Up" is on the other side, though it has been hailed for its subject.



It remains to see which film begs Oscars for the Best Picture, but analysts are predicting that it could be between "Dune", and "Power of The Dog", two of the top-rated movies. On IMDb, "Dune's" rating is 8.1 while "Power of The Dog" is rated with 6.9 ratings.



Meanwhile, IMDb has released the list of top 10 highest-rated Best Picture Oscars winning movies of all time. "The Godfather" (1972), based on Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name, lends at the number position with IMDb ratings of 9.2. At the 45th Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, in addition to 7 other nominations.



The sequel to "Godfather", released in 1974, is IMDb's 2nd highest-rated movie that won the Best Picture Oscar. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards at the 47th Academy Awards and went on to win 6 of them. "The Godfather Part II" also became the first sequel to win the Best Picture Oscar.



Tom Hanks' comedy-drama "Forrest Gump", which is also being remade in Hindi as "Lal Singh Chadha", starring superstar Aamir Khan, had won the 6 Oscars including Best Picture at the 67th Academy Awards. In the IMDb's list of the Best Picture winners, "Forest Gump" lands at number 5. "Gladiator" ranks number 10 in the list. It won Best Picture among the 5 Oscars at the 73rd Academy Awards.

Pictures and DC Studios' Superman was the number one movie at the worldwide box office of the weekend (July 11-13) after the mighty opening of over $200 million. ## The first film in Peter Safran and James Gunn-headed DC Studios Phase I - "Gods and Monsters", Superman topped studios' conservative projections by a good margin at the domestic (North America) box office, but fell slightly below the projection overseas. ## Superman's Domestic, Overseas, and Worldwide Opening Weekend Collection ## The superhero movie, fronted by David Corenswet, stars as Man of Steel aka Superman, had a very good opening weekend domestically, grossing a solid $125 million over 3-day weekend, including Thursday previews. This makes it the biggest solo Superman opener, beating Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" (2013), which opened to $116.6 million. ## Among the DC comics' movies, Superman had the 6th biggest start domestically, between "Suicide Squad" ($133.6 million) and "Man of Steel" ($116.6 million). Superman had the third biggest North American opening of 2025, behind "Lilo & Stitch" ($146 million) and "A Minecraft Movie" ($162 million). ## While Superman had a solid start domestically, the movie was slightly softer than expected at the international box office with $95 million 5-day opening weekend from 78 markets, bringing its global tally to $220 million. It is ahead of "Man of Steel" ($200 million) and behind "Wonder Woman" ($228 million). ## Superman's Biggest Overseas/International Market, and Opening Weekend Collection In India ## The United Kingdom was the strongest international market for the film with $9.8 million opening weekend, followed by Mexico ($8.8 million) and China ($6.6 million). India was also among the top 10 contributors, with the gross collection of 31+ crores ($3.70 million) opening weekend. It was also the number 1 movie at the Indian box office this weekend. ## Superman had the 4th biggest opening weekend for a Hollywood title of 2025 in India, behind "Jurassic World Rebirth", "F1", and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning". The word of mouth for the movie is on the positive side, which should help it to have a decent run, despite the competition with fellow Hollywood titles and Indian films. ## About James Gunn's Superman Movie ## Written and directed by James Gunn, it is the first film in the DC Universe (DCU) produced by DC Studios and the second reboot of the Superman film series.
