Jana Nayagan Postponed Amid Censor Row; Records India's Largest Ticket Refund

Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan has been officially postponed from its January 9 release date due to a delay in obtaining the Indian censor certificate. This late-stage rescheduling has triggered the largest refund process in Indian film history. While international markets have already cleared the film, the domestic deadlock has prompted widespread support from the film fraternity and shifted the box office focus toward other festive releases like Prabhas's The Raja Saab. According to industry trackers and ticketing platforms, BookMyShow has begun the monumental task of refunding over 450,000 tickets. This marks the first time a film of this magnitude has had to cancel and repay such a massive volume of pre-booked seats simultaneously. While the film has already been cleared for release in 25 countries internationally, the pending status of the censor certificate in India has made a Pongal release legally impossible. Trade analysts suggest that the earliest the film could now hit screens is January 22nd or 23rd, 2026. The sudden delay of Jana Nayagan has brought the film fraternity together to back Vijay during this crisis. Actor Ravi Mohan (Jayam Ravi) expressed his support on X, stating that Vijay himself is the opening and the festive season essentially begins whenever he arrives on screen. He emphasized that he stands with the star as one among millions of supporters, regardless of the change in schedule. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Director Karthik Subbaraj criticized the current regulatory environment, noting that the required three-month lead time for censor completion is unrealistic for big-budget films finishing post-production. He warned that these rigid timelines are killing cinema, citing that other major releases like Parasakthi are already experiencing similar booking disruptions. Meanwhile, Sibi Sathyaraj offered a more hopeful perspective, encouraging fans to remain patient and viewing these administrative challenges as the buildup to a massive eventual success. The exit of Jana Nayagan from the Pongal race has significantly altered the theatrical landscape. As reported earlier, Prabhas's The Raja Saab is the immediate beneficiary, with theaters across Tamil Nadu and overseas shifting prime shows and extra screens to the horror-comedy to accommodate the holiday crowd. For Vijay fans, the wait for the People's Leader continues. While the financial hit from refunds is historic, the surging emotional support from the industry suggests that when Jana Nayagan finally arrives, it may witness an opening unlike any seen before.

OFFICIAL: Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan Postponed; Over ₹100 Crore in Advance Bookings Wiped Out? Big Advantage for Prabhas's The Raja Saab

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the global film industry, KVN Productions has officially announced the postponement of Thalapathy Vijay's final cinematic outing, Jana Nayagan. Originally scheduled for a grand worldwide release on January 9, the film has been pushed forward due to unavoidable circumstances beyond control. The production house expressed a heavy heart, stating that the decision was not an easy one given the immense anticipation surrounding what is meant to be the swan song of Vijay's legendary career. pic.twitter.com/dRCsoOrnDp— KVN Productions (@KvnProductions) January 7, 2026 The financial implications of this eleventh-hour delay are staggering. According to trade reports , nearly ₹40 crore in overseas opening day advance bookings and close to ₹60 crore for the opening weekend have been wiped out instantly. This combined ₹100 crore loss in global pre-sales represents a massive blow to overseas exhibitors and distributors who had locked in prime shows and a record-breaking wide rollout. Domestically, the impact is equally painful, with Karnataka Talkies reporting that theatres have been informed to refund tickets worth nearly ₹6 crore in Karnataka alone. This level of hard-earned demand is rare in Indian cinema, and industry analysts are calling it a costly miss for KVN Productions that may be difficult to replicate when a new date is finally announced. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The postponement of Jana Nayagan has created a sudden vacuum at the box office, resulting in a big advantage for Prabhas's The Raja Saab. With the departure of the Tamil titan from the January 9th slot, The Raja Saab is now set to secure a significantly higher screen count across all territories. In a major strategic shift, the Tamil version of The Raja Saab, which was initially scheduled for release on January 10th, can now be advanced to January 9th to capitalize on the open holiday window. This reshuffling of the box office deck ensures that Prabhas's horror-comedy and other releases like Parasakthi will now secure better prime-time showtimes and expanded screen space in key markets that were previously dominated by Vijay's film. Despite the commercial shifts, the postponement has seen a rare display of fan solidarity. Prabhas fans (@HailPrabhas007) have voiced their support for Thalapathy Vijay's followers, noting that a postponement just a day or two before release is a painful experience, especially for a career-ending film with lakhs of tickets already sold. While exhibitors go back to square one to replan their schedules, the trade remains hopeful that when Jana Nayagan finally hits the big screen, it will return with the same ferocity to break all-time records. Until then, all eyes are on the Rebel Star as The Raja Saab prepares to dominate the now-vacant Sankranti/Pongal frame. The official release date for Jana Nayagan is currently being reassessed following the postponement announcement. A major factor influencing the new schedule is the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. Since the film marks the final project of a lead actor entering the political arena, the timing is critical. A mid-April release, which would normally be a preferred holiday slot, is considered logistically unfeasible as it coincides with the peak of the electoral cycle.Alternatively, some trade analysts are discussing a potential Republic Day (January 26th) slot if the unavoidable circumstances are resolved quickly, though this would mean a direct clash with Sunny Deol's Border 2. As of now, while these windows are being heavily debated the official confirmation remains pending from the production house.

Vijay's Jana Nayagan Postponed: A Big Advantage For Sivakarthikeyan-Starrer Parasakthi

Chennai, January 7 - Thalapathy Vijay's much-anticipated political action drama Jana Nayagan has officially been postponed, and the development could turn out to be a massive advantage for Sivakarthikeyan's upcoming film Parasakthi, which is scheduled to release on January 10 amid solid buzz. Over the past few days, multiple reports have suggested that Jana Nayagan might miss its planned release date due to ongoing censorship issues. After CBFC failed to provide a certificate with only a day left before release, the makers approached the Madras High Court, which has reserved its order, which will only be pronounced on January 9, on the same day as Jana Nayagan is scheduled for release. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) With Jana Nayagan getting postponed, Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi, which is also facing censor delay, stands to benefit the most. The film has already created history with its trailer, which emerged as the most-viewed Tamil trailer in the first 24 hours, beating Jana Nayagan's earlier record. This strong digital response clearly indicates massive audience interest. With no major Vijay release around the same window, Parasakthi could enjoy a cleaner box office run, especially in Tamil Nadu, where clashes between top stars often split screens and footfalls. A Vijay film typically dominates theatres with maximum screen allocation and show counts. In the absence of Jana Nayagan, Parasakthi will now secure much better screen penetration across Tamil Nadu. Sivakarthikeyan has been steadily consolidating his position as a bankable star, and Parasakthi appears to be another crucial step in that journey. With mounting hype, record-breaking trailer views, and now a possible clash-free release window, especially in Tamil Nadu, the film is shaping up to be one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. Vijay's Jana Nayagan Postponed After Censor Certificate Delay

Chennai, January 7 - Thalapathy Vijay's much-awaited Jana Nayagan has officially been postponed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) failed to issue the censor certificate ahead of its scheduled January 9 release. The new date is not announced yet. With no clearance in sight, the makers approached the Madras High Court seeking an urgent hearing to resolve the issue. After hearing arguments, the High Court reserved its order and stated that the verdict will be pronounced in the morning on January 9. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Since a film cannot be released theatrically without censor approval, this development makes the planned release date unviable. The uncertainty has already impacted advance bookings, particularly in Tamil Nadu, and an official postponement announcement is expected to be made shortly. Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is Vijay's last film before his full-time political entry. The movie has been carrying huge buzz among the fans and trade alike, and despite the last-minute hurdle, the buzz is only expected to intensify. Stay tuned...

Jana Nayagan Vs The Raja Saab Overseas Advance Booking: Vijay Starrer Storms Ahead With Massive Lead

Chennai, January 6 - Thalapathy Vijay's swan song is heading for a massive start at the worldwide box office, and it seems to be winning the opening day battle against Prabhas' The Raja Saab, which is scheduled to hit the big screens on the same day, on January 9 in multiple languages. With just three days to go before release, the overseas box office battle between Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Prabhas' The Raja Saab is already turning one-sided. The advance booking trends clearly indicate that the Tamil political action drama has taken a commanding lead, setting the stage for a dominant opening overseas. According to the latest trade estimates, Jana Nayagan has crossed $3.5 million (32+ crores) in overseas pre-sales for the opening day alone, including premieres. The Vijay starrer is witnessing exceptional momentum across key international markets, including North America, the UK, and Malaysia. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Jana Nayagan is Vijay's last film before his full-time political entry, and that sentiment seems to be playing a big role in pre-sales. The actor's last few films have done well in pre-sales, but some of the markets are performing much better than on previous occasions. With bookings going strong and three full days remaining, the opening-day overseas figure is expected to climb even higher. On the other hand, The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas and positioned as a romantic horror-comedy entertainer, has so far recorded around $1 million (9 crores) in overseas advance sales for day 1+premieres. While the numbers are decent and show steady growth, they fall significantly short when compared to Jana Nayagan's blistering pace. With $3.5+ million vs $1 million in opening-day pre-sales, Jana Nayagan currently enjoys a lead of more than $2.5 million overseas, a gap that is considered substantial at this stage of the booking window. The Raja Saab will find it difficult, or it can be said that it is almost out of reach for the movie to close this margin before release day. Both films are gearing up for a massive festive release, and final results will ultimately depend on word of mouth, audience reception, and weekend walk-ins. However, going by current trends, Jana Nayagan is firmly placed for a record-breaking overseas opening, while The Raja Saab is expected to rely more on post-release growth. Stay tuned...

Jana Nayagan Worldwide Pre-Sales: Thalapathy Vijay Starrer Crosses ₹50 Crore Mark; Shatters Records in Malaysia

Thalapathy Vijay's highly anticipated action thriller, Jana Nayagan, is creating a massive storm at the global box office even before its theatrical debut. With three days still remaining for the grand release, the film has officially surpassed the ₹50 Crore gross mark in worldwide pre-sales, signaling one of the biggest openings for a Tamil film in recent history. The film's performance in Malaysia has been nothing short of historic. Showing unprecedented momentum, Jana Nayagan reportedly eclipsed the pace of Rajinikanth's Coolie within just the first 1 hour and 30 minutes of bookings opening. Currently, after the first 24 hours, the film has sold 90,000+ tickets (grossing RM 2.1M+). While this already makes it the 3rd highest single-day sales of all time in Malaysia, it is now on the verge of overtaking Coolie (95K tickets) to claim the second spot, with Leo (108K tickets) holding the top record. Given the current trajectory, trade analysts expect the film to challenge the #1 position before its premiere. The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia has officially granted the film a '16' certification (suitable for ages 16 and above). In India, the advance booking is off to a flying start, particularly in the Southern states. In Kerala, the film has already amassed ₹2.36 Crore in pre-sales, cementing Vijay's status as a top-tier star in the neighboring state. According to early tracking data, the All-India 1st Day Advance Booking Gross (excluding blocked seats) stands at ₹5.86 Crore, with 202,784 tickets sold across 2,071 shows. When including blocked seats, the figure jumps significantly to ₹8.73 Crore. The average ticket price (ATP) is currently trending at ₹217. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Despite the box office euphoria, the film is facing a minor legal speed bump. The Madras High Court has taken up a matter regarding the film's censor certificate. The hearing was adjourned today and is set to continue tomorrow. Fans and trade experts are closely watching the proceedings, though it is not currently expected to delay the film's scheduled release. Jana Nayagan is described as a high-octane political action drama centered on an upright and fearless police inspector. The narrative follows his quest to dismantle a vast and dangerous conspiracy involving an extremist group and a powerful politician—a plot that threatens the very core of Indian democracy. Vijay's Jana Nayagan Makers Approach Madras High Court Over Censor Certificate Delay

Chennai, January 6 - The makers of Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan have moved the Madras High Court after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) failed to issue the film's censor certificate, just days ahead of its scheduled January 9, 2026, release. According to reports, the film was submitted for certification on December 18, 2025, and the makers have already complied with the minor modifications suggested by the CBFC. However, the certificate is still pending, forcing the makers to seek urgent legal intervention. An urgent hearing was listed on January 6. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The delay has significantly impacted bookings in Tamil Nadu, where full-fledged ticket sales cannot begin without CBFC clearance. While bookings have opened in overseas markets and a few Indian states, exhibitors in Tamil Nadu remain on hold, causing concern among distributors and theatre owners ahead of the Pongal festive period. Adding to the controversy, members of Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have criticised the delay, alleging that the certification process is being unnecessarily prolonged. Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is Vijay's final film before his full-time political entry, making the censor delay a closely watched issue across the industry. Stay tuned...

Jana Nayagan Trailer: Thalapathy Vijay's Swansong Eyes Historic Pongal Opening Amid Censor Hurdles

The wait is over. KVN Productions has officially unveiled the much-anticipated trailer of Jana Nayagan, one of the most awaited films of the decade. Released on January 3 at 6:45 PM, the trailer has dropped simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu (Jana Nayakudu), and Hindi (Jan Neta), setting the internet abuzz and igniting massive excitement among fans across languages. Directed by the master of high-stakes thrillers, H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is described as a Mass Action Political Thriller. Vijay reportedly plays an IPS officer who turns into a reluctant revolutionary. The film's core theme revolves around the tagline: A true leader rises not for power, but for the people, paralleling Vijay's real-life political journey. Produced by KVN Productions on a staggering budget of ₹300 Crore, Jana Nayagan stands as one of the most expensive and ambitious ventures in the history of Kollywood. The film marks the highly anticipated reunion of the lead pair, Thalapathy Vijay and Pooja Hegde, who last shared the screen in Beast. Adding intense gravitas to the conflict, Bollywood powerhouse Bobby Deol has been roped in as the primary antagonist, serving as a formidable foil to Vijay's character. Beyond the leads, the project boasts a stellar ensemble cast featuring a mix of powerhouse performers and rising stars, including Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, ensuring a high-octane cinematic experience for the audience. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) While global anticipation for Jana Nayagan is at an all-time high, the film is currently navigating a complex censorship process. Industry reports indicate that the CBFC has recommended a series of modifications, primarily focusing on toning down intense action gore and muting specific political dialogues to secure a 'UA' rating.Sources close to the production suggest that an edited version has already been resubmitted; however, a final decision from the certification team is still awaited. This ongoing censor silence has caused a significant bottleneck for Tamil Nadu exhibitors, who are holding back advance bookings to avoid scheduling risks. The team remains optimistic that the clearance will be granted within the next 24 hours to facilitate a massive state-wide opening. Despite the current domestic hurdles regarding censorship, Jana Nayagan is already shattering records on the international stage. The film is witnessing absolute overseas domination, with advance bookings in key markets like North America, the UK, and Australia grossing an estimated ₹11–12 Crore ($1.5M). When combined with the pre-sales from Karnataka and Kerala in India, the total worldwide opening day gross has officially surged past the ₹20 Crore mark as of today, January 3. Jana Nayagan Advance Booking: Censor Certificate Delaying Tamil Nadu Bookings of Vijay-starrer

Chennai, January 3 - Thalapathy Vijay's highly anticipated political action drama Jana Nayagan's advance booking has run into a hurdle in Tamil Nadu, with theatres yet to open ticket sales due to the film still awaiting its CBFC censor certificate. Directed by H. Vinoth, the movie also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju, among others. With the release date of the film drawing closer, the delay has become a major talking point among trade, with theatres reportedly in panic mode. Theatres across Tamil Nadu are holding back booking until the film receives official certification, a move taken to avoid last-minute changes or scheduling issues. As per industry reports, the CBFC is said to have suggested a few minor changes, including cuts and dialogue modifications. Until these are addressed and the censor certificate is issued, Tamil Nadu exhibitors are choosing to wait before opening bookings. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The delay has also sparked speculation on social media, especially given the film's political theme and Vijay's real-life political involvement. However, it is believed that late certification is fairly common, particularly for high-profile releases, and does not necessarily indicate a larger issue. Theatres in Tamil Nadu are going through tremendous pressure, especially single screens, as they have to slot show timings and open bookings. Anyway, some of them are planning to open bookings without a certificate online from Monday. As said, apart from Tamil Nadu, multiplexes outside the state are also finding it difficult to open bookings without a certificate as they seek clarity soon. Meanwhile, amid the delay in its home state, Jana Nayagan has already begun its booking in overseas markets as well as in Karnataka and Kerala, and the response so far has been solid, with already over 20+ crores gross for opening day. Early trends are healthy, reflecting the massive anticipation surrounding Vijay's film, which has been confirmed to be his last movie before his political entry. Stay tuned...
