Tokyo Olympics 2020 Boxing Results: Lovlina Borgohain Wins Quarterfinal

A second medal is in the process for India.

The first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics has defeated the German boxer Nadine Apetz. On 30th July 2021, she defeated Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin and secured her medal.

Her women's welterweight quarterfinal clash at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday has assured her that she will win at least a bronze medal. India's only medal at the Games so far has been weightlifter Mirabai Chanu's silver in the 49kg division.

In March 2020, Borgohain secured the Olympic berth in the 69 kg with a 5-0 win over Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. This win would make her the first-ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics.

However, She lost to the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships silver-medallist Gu Hong of China in a unanimous 5-0 verdict and signed off with a Bronze medal at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.

The Indian will face Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli, the reigning World Champion and current World No. 1, in the semifinals on August 4.
