Tom Holland's Domination At The Box Office Continues With 'Uncharted'

Los Angeles, February 19 - Tom Holland is proving his worth at the box office as his latest film, "Uncharted", also featuring Mark Wahlberg, has surpassed expectation and opened to a strong $15.4 million on Friday at the domestic (North America) box office. ## The Sony Pictures' video game adaptation, based on the popular PlayStation game series from publisher Naughty Dog, "Uncharted" is projected to gross $40-$44 million in the 3-day weekend. "Uncharted" is doing far more business than expected thanks to younger males who are frequently visiting theaters, reports The Hollywood Reporter. ## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the movie did not receive well by the critics, giving just 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is being loved by the audiences, who gave it a B+ CinemaScore and 88% score on Tomatometer. The strong box office performance of "Uncharted" also gives an indication of how critics' reviews have become overrated, as suggested by director Ruben Fleischer, who called critics' reviews surprising for being so negative. ## The $120 million budgeted film was conceived as an origin story for the game series' globe-trotting adventurer Nathan Drake, played by Holland. Nathan begins the story as a bartender before he is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago. ## What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.## Meanwhile, Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which opened in December 2021, is still putting strong legs at the domestic box office. On its 10th Friday domestically, the superhero movie grossed $1.8 million, dropping just 9% from the last Friday. Mumbai, February 14 - With "Spider-Man: No Way Home" still putting strong numbers at the box office, Tom Holland's next film "Uncharted" has kicked off the international box office on a strong note. ## Ahead of its domestic (North America) debut on February 18, Sony's big-screen adaptation of its popular video game series opened in 15 international markets and grossed a solid $21.5 million over Valentine's Day weekend. There were questions about whether Tom Holland could bring audiences to theaters outside his "Spider-Man" movies, and "Uncharted" might have answered all those questions. ## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the action-adventure film had the biggest start in the United Kingdom, swinging to $6.4 million, followed by Russia with $4.5 million, Spain with $3.5 million, and Ukraine with $1.3 million.## Compared to pandemic-era blockbusters, "Uncharted" movie is tracking 12% above "Eternals", 18% above "Black Widow" and 21% higher than "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" at similar points in their theatrical rollouts, according to Variety.## The $120 million budgeted movie, will debut in the U.S. and Canada in the coming weekend along with India, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. Mumbai, December 24 - Sony Pictures has released the second trailer of Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg's action-adventure "Uncharted". The movie serves as an origin story and prequel to the video games of the same name created by Naughty Dog. It stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor Sullivan, along with Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas in supporting roles.## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, "Uncharted" will be released on 18 February 2022 in theaters. Sony has been a supporter of an exclusive theatrical release and continues to do despite the scare of the new covid-19 variant. The studio has also confirmed the Indian release of the film in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu on Feb. 18. ## ## Interestingly, "Uncharted" entered development many moons back in 2008, with film producer Avi Arad stating that he would be working with Sony Pictures to develop a film adaptation of Uncharted. However, the movie kept delayed due to the complicated production process. It was in 2017 when Holland was cast to play the lead role and principal photography commenced in March 2020. ## The official synopsis of "Uncharted" released by Sony Pictures states, "Based on one of the best-selling, most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, Uncharted introduces audiences to the young street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and showcases his first treasure hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg).
