Mumbai, August 21 - The Indian cinema has been taking giant steps in reaching the global audience over the last few years. There have been many films recently which worked wonders at the box office outside India, proving the growing impact of Indian films beyond national boundaries. ## Going ahead, there are plenty of films to look forward to, and one of them is producer Namit Malhotra's epic Ramayana. Los Angeles, July 17 - After creating history with Oppenheimer (2023), acclaimed director Christopher Nolan will return to the big screen with the epic action fantasy The Odyssey on July 17, 2026, and there is already massive anticipation for it. ## With exactly a year to go before the release, Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan have already put the movie on advance sale for IMAX theatres that are equipped to screen the epic in 70MM, which is said to be Nolan's format of choice. ## According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is the first time in history that any tickets have gone on sale a year before a film's release. Reportedly, there are around 30 IMAX locations that are capable of playing 70mm film reels, and the bookings for The Odyssey have opened in 26 of them. ## The initial response to the movie is excellent, as expected. Mumbai, September 20 - 20th Century Studios' sci-fi horror thriller Alien: Romulus has scripted a box office history to become the highest-grossing horror movie of all time in IMAX. ## Directed by Fede Ãlvarez, the 7th movie in the Alien franchise has so far grossed over $40 million in IMAX format since its debut in mid-August 2024, making it the biggest horror grosser in this premium format.## Alien: Romulus is going strong and recently crossed $300 million at the worldwide box office. The movie has so far grossed approximately $332 million, becoming the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. Mumbai, November 17 - The growing interest among Indian movie audiences has resulted in record-breaking revenue for IMAX in 2023. The large-format immersive cinematic experience, IMAX has exceeded its 2022 box office success in this movie-loving nation by a good margin and set a new revenue record. ## IMAX announced that in 2023, all the IMAX films so far have grossed around $20 million (166 crores) in India, as compared to $18.5 million in 2022. Christopher Nolan's atom bomb movie "Oppenheimer" was easily the most profitable as IMAX announced it grossed around 50 crores in India. ## In 2023, the Indian filmmakers have also tried their luck in IMAX and have a success. Shah Rukh Khan's "Pathaan" and "Jawan" have been the most successful Indian movies for IMAX. It is learned that the action thriller "Jawan" grossed approx. 13 crores while spy actioner "Pathaan" generated around 12 crores in IMAX. ## IMAX has increased its screen count in India to operational 26 screens in 2023 from 22 screens in 2022. As a result, a total of 39 films were released on IMAX in 2023, including 6 Indian films while in 2022, a total of 34 films were released in this format in India. ## The company is also looking at standalone IMAX properties across the country while the average ticket price ranges around ₹360-370, a senior executive said. "œThe strong Hollywood line-up has played a big role in our business this year but from a local Indian perspective too, we're asked for movies to be released in the IMAX format on an everyday basis and we try and accommodate all those that we can", Preetham Daniel, vice-president APAC (Asia Pacific), theatre development, IMAX Corp., told Mint. ## Among the other films, released in IMAX this year, "Mission Impossible 7" grossed over 10 crores, followed by "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" with approx. 7.80 crores, "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse" with approx. 6.75 crores. Thalapathy Vijay's "Leo" also has good success with approx. 5.50 crores in IMAX, while Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan - 2" minted around 3.50 crores gross. Mumbai, July 31 - Blockbuster filmmaker Christopher Nolan's atom bomb movie "Oppenheimer" is having a blast at the Indian box office. The movie is nearing the 100 crores net mark while it has already crossed this milestone in gross collection. ## "Oppenheimer" has been shot entirely in IMAX cameras and not so surprisingly, it is proving to be an IMAX wonder around the globe. In India, the movie has been exceptional as far as the IMAX format is concerned. On its second Monday, it is running with over 60% occupancy in IMAX, and the same response is expected for the next couple of weeks. ## In IMAX, "Oppenheimer" has crossed a huge 20 crores gross mark in just 11 days in India, the fastest movie ever to reach this mark. In the first week, it grossed 13.10 crores in IMAX while in the second week, the movie scored 7.50 crores gross (4 days) for a total of 20.60 crores gross in 11 days. It will reach 25 crores mark by the end of the second week and this will be almost 1/4 of its total collection.## Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's "Mission Impossible 7" was also released in IMAX and it grossed just 8.15 crores in 9 days before all the IMAX screens were shifted for "Oppenheimer". "MI7", however, got terrific response in the regular format and has crossed 100 crores net mark already.## At present, there are just 24 IMAX theaters in India, and at least 5 more are expected to be added this year. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the movie is the sequel to "Captain Marvel" (2019), which grossed over $1.10 billion at the global box office. It is the first female-led superhero movie to top a billion dollars at the box office.## "The Marvels" is expected to be another money spinner for Marvel and Disney, however, it will have to perform exceptionally well to top come close to its predecessor. In a major setback to the film, it won't be playing in the IMAX format due to Warner Bros. In this case, "The Marvels" will be taking IMAX screens. ## "Right. Dune, specifically, I mean, there's another great movie coming out around [that] time, which is The Marvels from Marvel, and we can't play it because we are committed to Dune. So, Dune moves will just go over to The Marvels, and having a Marvel movie as a backup is not the worst position to be in the world", Richard Gelfond, the Chief Executive Officer, IMAX said in a recent earning call. ## "The Marvels" stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, alongside Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Mumbai, April 5 - IMAX recorded record-breaking results at the box office in the first quarter of 2023 as the company announced on April 4 that its first quarter box office earning was $282.2 million, beating its previous best set in 2016 by more than $10 million. ## The record-breaking results were powered by a potent global mix of releases; the first quarter now stands as IMAX's highest-grossing quarter ever for local language releases and also saw the stunning performance of James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water".## As far as Indian films are concerned, IMAX announced that Shah Rukh Khan-fronted mega-blockbuster "Pathaan" delivered IMAX's biggest global opening weekend of all time for an Indian film. The company didn't reveal the box office collection for a particular local movie but revealed that local language films recorded $86.3 million and "Pathaan" was one of the biggest contributors to that. ## "The first quarter is an excellent indicator of the promise we see in 2023 "” a year in which we expect to return to our record-breaking levels of box office from 2019", said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.
