The Bengal Files vs The Kashmir Files Box Office: Vivek Agnihotri's Final Files Chapter Struggles With Just 25% Of TKF's 3-Day Biz

Mumbai, September 8 - National award-winning filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's Files trilogy is heading towards a disappointing conclusion after the final chapter, The Bengal Files, falling short of expectations at the box office despite carrying similarities with The Kashmir Files, which became a mega blockbuster success. Based on the tragic true events surrounding Direct Action Day, also known as the Great Calcutta Killings on August 16, 1946, The Bengal Files has had an underwhelming opening weekend collection at the domestic box office. Despite positive reviews, the movie couldn't fly during the weekend after a decent opening of 1.75 crores net. TBF scored just around one-fourth (25%) of TKF with approximately 6.75 crores net (8 crores gross) in its 3-day opening weekend domestically. In comparison, the previous film in the Files series, The Kashmir Files, had an excellent domestic weekend with around 32 crores gross (27+ crores net). The sharp decline between the two films highlights the massive gap in audience interest towards the subject. While The Kashmir Files benefitted from extraordinary word-of-mouth, along with the awareness of the historical events, and became a cultural phenomenon, The Bengal Files is struggling to gain momentum, as trade believes that not many people are aware of the events shown in the film. One of the other major reasons for TBF's underwhelming performance is that the hasn't been allowed to release in its best-suited market, West Bengal, under political pressure from the ruling state party. The coming weekdays will be crucial to determine whether the film can pick up pace or settle for a modest run compared to its blockbuster predecessor. Stay tuned...

The Bengal Files Vs The Kashmir Files Box Office Day 1: Vivek Agnihotri's Final Files Chapter Fails To Match TKF's Opening

Mumbai, September 6 – National award-winning filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's much-discussed final instalment in the Files trilogy, The Bengal Files, has taken a moderate start at the Indian box office, badly affected by the intense competition with multiple films. On its opening day, The Bengal Files scored an estimated 1.75 crores net, which is a decent figure but falls short when compared to the good start of its predecessor, The Kashmir Files. Back in 2022, TKF had opened with 3.55 crores net, nearly double the start of Agnihotri's latest offering. The film, which marks the concluding chapter of Agnihotri's socio-political saga, based on dark truths of Indian history, carries significant expectations given the historic run of The Kashmir Files. While the opening is comparatively lower, the real test lies in word-of-mouth and how the collections trend over the weekend. Based on the events surrounding Direct Action Day on 16 August 1946, TBF is showing marginal growth on the second day. If the film manages to sustain well, it could still carve a strong run ahead, though matching The Kashmir Files’ record-breaking momentum seems like a challenging task. Stay tuned...

The Bengal Files Vs The Kashmir Files Advance Booking Day 1: Vivek Agnihotri's Final Chapter In Files Trilogy Scores Stronger Sales

Mumbai, September 5 – National award-winning filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri's much-talked-about reality-based political thriller film The Bengal Files, the final chapter in his popular Files Trilogy hits the big screen today, September 5, amid decent expectations. Based on a storyline focused on the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings and the Noakhali riots, depicting the violence and its aftermath as a genocide, The Bengal Files sees a low, but better than expected response in the pre-sales. The film managed to outshine the opening day sales of Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files, which went on to become a huge box office blockbuster. According to the tracked gross, the latest chapter in the filmmaker's controvercial trilogy, has managed to register 1.22 crore in Day 1 bookings (including block seats), thereby surpassing the advance sales of The Kashmir Files, which had clocked 1.13 crore gross back in 2022. This marks an interesting turnaround for Agnihotri, as expectations have been cautious given the sensitive subject and competition at the box office. With controversy around its release adding to the buzz, The Bengal Files has managed to decent advance traction, positioning itself for a better than expected opening day. Released in March 2022, The Kashmir Files was a surprise blockbuster that stunned the industry by recording the opening of over 3.50 crores net (4+ crores gross), followed by phenomenal word-of-mouth, eventually grossing over 300 crore worldwide. It set a high bar for The Bengal Files. Industry trackers note that while The Bengal Files has shown stronger pre-sales than TKF, the ultimate test will lie in audience word-of-mouth once the film hits theatres. If it follows a trajectory even close to The Kashmir Files, the film could emerge as another major success story. Stay tuned...

Multiplex Chains Refuse To Screen Vivek Agnihotri's The Bengal Files In Bengal Under Political Pressure, Makers Allege

Mumbai, September 4 - Director Vivek Agnihotri's much-awaited reality-based political thriller The Bengal Files is facing trouble in getting released in West Bengal amid pressure from the ruling state party, alleges the national award-winning filmmaker. Scheduled to release on September 5, the film presents a storyline focused on the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings and the Noakhali riots, depicting the violence and its aftermath as a genocide, and claiming that these chapters of history were deliberately suppressed or ignored. Ever since the movie was announced, it has been under constant scrutiny for showing the dark truth of Indian history. Now, this scrutiny is leading to the unofficial ban on the film in Bengal, which forced the makers to write an open letter to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for urgent intervention. Producer of #TheBengalFiles, Pallavi Joshi, writes an open letter to the President of India:URGENT APPEAL:Your Excellency, @rashtrapatibhvn,"As Producer of #TheBengalFiles, I am pained that multiplex chains in Bengal have refused the film’s release under political pressure… pic.twitter.com/ERTLvqxp3y— Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri (@vivekagnihotri) September 4, 2025 In the letter, producer Pallavi Joshi has alleged that theatre chains in West Bengal are refusing to screen the movie under political pressure. Joshi also alleged that she, along with her family, is threatened every day by the workers of the ruling party under Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee. It is worth noting that similar hurdles were also faced by Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files, which some of the states refused to release, but the film went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of 2022. It needs to be seen how things unfold for The Bengal Files, which carries similarities with TKF. Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions, the film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Simrat Kaur, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur in key roles. Advance Booking for Vivek Agnihotri's The Bengal Files Begins: Will It Repeat The Kashmir Files' Historic Run?

Mumbai, August 31: Director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is back with the final film in his Files trilogy, The Bengal Files, which is carrying the uncanny buzz in the trade and audiences alike. Following the historic success of The Kashmir Files (2022), which emerged as one of the biggest post-pandemic blockbusters in India, expectations are sky-high for Agnihotri's latest venture. The political reality drama is scheduled to release on September 5, and the advance ticket sales for the same have begun on August 31 in key circuits. Exhibitors believe the film could build momentum over the coming days, especially with strong word-of-mouth likely to play a pivotal role — a trend similar to what fueled The Kashmir Files into a nationwide phenomenon. The industry has largely been silent on Agnihotri's last few films, and the same is the case with The Bengal Files; even the trade, as a whole, is not throwing its hat in on what could be the outcome of this movie, which is very much similar to TKF on many levels. The Kashmir Files benefitted from raw audience emotions and word-of-mouth growth, and that might be the advantage for The Bengal Files, which is, as said, similar in genre and ignites the same emotions. The film has already generated conversations online, with discussions about its sensitive subject matter and Vivek Agnihotri's storytelling approach. Can It Match The Kashmir Files? The Kashmir Files stunned the trade by grossing over 340 crores worldwide on a modest budget, becoming one of the most profitable films in Indian cinema history. The big question is whether The Bengal Files can replicate that trajectory. Well, that is a question which will be answered once the film hits the screens. However, as said, there are similarities between the two films, including the dark history, which can be a game-changer for the film. Stay tuned...

Vivek Agnihotri's The Bengal Files Censor Certificate and Record Runtime Revealed

Mumbai, August 27 - National Award-winning filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is all set to release the third instalment and possibly the final film in his acclaimed Files trilogy with The Bengal Files, which releases on September 5. The movie has been making headlines in the media just like the previous films for its political commentary, which has been the hallmark of the franchise. This upcoming film portrays the tragic events surrounding Direct Action Day, also known as the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings on 16 August 1946. Ahead of the film's release, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the movie, and like The Kashmir Files, it has also got an A certificate. What makes the update even more significant is the film's approved runtime, which is 3 hours and 24 minutes (204 minutes). This not only makes The Bengal Files the longest film in Agnihotri's trilogy, surpassing The Kashmir Files (2 hours 50 minutes) and The Tashkent Files (2 hours 24 minutes), but also positions it among the longest mainstream Hindi films ever released. In recent times, it is easily the longest Bollywood film, beating Ranbir Kapoor's Animal (201 minutes). Given its certification and extended runtime of The Bengal Files, trade experts believe the film is being positioned as an epic-scale socio-political drama meant to leave a lasting impact. Agnihotri, known for his politically charged storytelling, has previously sparked nationwide discussions with his hard-hitting narratives. With The Bengal Files, the director is expected to dive into yet another controversial and emotionally intense chapter of Indian history. Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions, the movie stars Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Simrat Kaur, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur in key roles. The Bengal Files Director Vivek Agnihotri Responds Strongly to John Abraham's Criticism of The Kashmir Files

Mumbai, August 22 - National award-winning director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is gearing up for the release of political drama The Bengal Files, which is the third piece in Agnihotri's Files trilogy after National Award-winning movies The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022). The upcoming movie revolves around the Calcutta riots of August 16, 1946, which were triggered after the All-India Muslim League called for Direct Action Day to demand a separate homeland. The movie has been in the media headlines for various reasons, which was expected. Recently, Bollywood star John Abraham shared his opinion on films like The Kashmir Files and Chhaava, and labelled them as the extreme right wing's ideological films, which he said are not good for society. He expressed that he would never make films like The Kashmir Files to "sway people in a hyper-political environment". Abraham's comments left many people furious, including director Agnihotri. During an interview with Padmaja Joshi of NDTV, the filmmaker, who worked with Abraham in 2007's sports drama Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, reacted to the actor's comment about The Kashmir Files. "John is not a historian, an intellectual, a thinker, or a writer. He has been making very, very jingoistic films like Satyameva Jayate, too. He made Diplomat and all those kinds of films. He must have said that for a variety of reasons. If you had told me some great historian had said this, I would have understood it. I don't care about what he's saying. When was India's atmosphere not hyper-political? When was it that Hindu-Muslim and caste issues never existed in India?" – Agnihotri The filmmaker further said, "He is known for driving motorbikes and showing his body and eating protein, he should focus on those things, film-on mein naa hi ghuse toh behtar hai (better if he doesn't get into talking about films)." Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions in association with Zee Studios, The Bengal Files stars Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Simrat Kaur, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur.
